I've just finished watching an entire box set of 'Callan', a series that was broadcast on UK TV from 1968-1972. Not all the episodes survive, but the 1970-72 stuff is complete.

This stars Edward Woodward as David Callan, a spy working for the British Intelligence service. Usually portrayed as a 'realistic' or 'gritty' antidote to the glamorous James Bond stereotype, and it certainly is a million miles away from that, but I found myself wondering again and again how true to life this actually was. Were British and KGB intelligence agents really tracking each other down in London and other European cities in the late 60s and early 70s, and shooting each other dead all the time?

Whatever, these episodes are well worth a watch for their artistic merit and entertainment value. Woodward apparently starred in a series called 'The Equalizer' a couple of decades later, but I haven't seen any of that, and somehow suspect that I wouldn't want to.

I've been watching episodes of the classic British comedy series 'The Two Ronnies' from 1971. This was shown on UK television from 1971-1987, and features Ronnie Barker and Ronnie Corbett. Not sure how well known these two are, if at all, in other parts of the world.

Predictably, some of the material hasn't aged too well, particularly the music hall and variety show acts, and a fair bit of the content wouldn't get past the politically correct censorship apparatus nowadays, but there's still some excellent stuff, especially the wordplay sketches in which Ronnie Barker excels himself (see video).

Certain people would dismiss the series as obsolete and even offensive these days, but it's worth noting that half of the Monty Python team were scriptwriters for the first series, and in 1971 Monty Python was as 'hip' and 'cool' as you could get!

Star Trek Voyager

It's been about a dozen years since I last watched one of these episodes, and it's pretty much as I remember it, very watchable but nothing that would make a lasting impression. I noticed that one of the 'laptops' on the spaceship bore an amazing resemblance to a late 1990s laptop, although the series is set in the 24th century!
