Chicken Ranch (1982)

An early TV documentary by British producer Nick Broomfield, who later made two acclaimed documentaries about serial killer Aileen Wuornos. This one is a 'fly on the wall' film about the goings on at a Nevada brothel of the same name. Not exactly ground-breaking or very revealing, but very watchable at the same time. I'm always a bit sceptical as to whether the participants can act normally under these sorts of conditions, and then there are always questions about the editing of the film, whether certain situations are 'engineered' or even scripted, etc.

Burn Notice (2007) on Hulu

Season 1, episodes 3 - 12

I should keep notes about the character development on this show. I've watched the series before when it was on Netflix years ago.

Michael Weston - the main character who was a spy for hire for the government until in episode one, he is dumped, AKA Burn Notice.

Fiona "Fee" Glenanne - an IRA trained freelancer who has worked with Michael in the past and saves him in episode one. She Loves  guns of all sorts and bombs of all sorts. In one episode she is hinting to Michael that it is her birthday. At the end of that episode he gives her a pistol, one that she has been swooning over. You would think he gave her a diamond necklace. It was funny. There was romance in their past and she would like to renew that relationship.

Sam Axe, aka Charles "Chuck" Finley - portrayed by Bruce Campbell. He is ex-military-something, where he originally met Michael. He lives on a pension. He always seems to have a girl friend that keeps him supplied with a new car. He never turns down a beer, when offered, and often is looking for a beer.

Madeline Weston - Michael's mom portrayed by Sharon Gless. She always seems concerned and a bit clueless how much danger Michael is in. He tells her "Here is a burner phone. Only use it to call me. So of course she calls her home home, which is tapped, to get any messages that have been left. She is always smoking or lighting a cigarette.

Nate Weston - Michael's brother who always has a sure fire scheme for making money. This includes gambling.

I told my youngest son I was watching the show again. He introduced it to me. I referred to it as "our favorite how-to show." Michael's narration is always providing helpful tips on building bombs, setting traps, dealing with an impossible situation, often when outnumbered, and such stuff.

On a fun note. I was watching this while playing World of Warcraft. Not a good combination because the show distracts me. A couple times I found I was swimming in a canal at Stormwind while glued to the action and I just ran off a ledge, not paying attention.

I watched the season finale of Foundation season two. Overall I felt season one of the show was a little more interesting. Season two was still well worth watching and entertaining for me though.

NCIS

Season 4, episode 24 - Angel of Death

Sadly appropriate. I am watching because I learned this morning that David McCallum passed away yesterday (Sept. 25, 2023). :( I remember him when I was a kid, playing Illya Kuryakin on The Man from U.N.C.L.E.. I was a fan.
I just saw him in Murder, She Wrote a few days ago.

I had been watching NCIS several weeks ago, and this was the next episode in my queue. It was appropriately the season finale.

Last night we finished watching our way through the three seasons of:

Humans [2015–2018]
<=>"Reboot. Recharge. Rebel."

There are synthetic people, "synths", that is: androids.

In general they are obedient, competent slaves. They are so much like us that they can live with us and some people get emotionally attached to them.

But their creator also produced a version of their software that would make them conscious. With their own desires and agendas.

I've seen better, but not often. good R E C O M M E N D E D good

(My bride does not share my strong interest in good science fiction about computers but she liked this series a lot. It has a good, rich story-line. And the interpersonal drama...sometimes involving synthetic persons...was very good!)

Poirot (2014) on Britbox

Season 13, episode 4 - The Labours of Hercules

This is a sad episode. The later episodes of Poirot are sometimes sad and Poirot gets older and sometimes disillusioned. This episode starts with Poirot making a promise to a young lady that she will be be okay. She is not. She is brutally killed by a psychopath, and Poirot blames himself. He then set out to solve a mystery that would possibly reunite a young man, a driver, with a woman he fell in love with. This starts him on a path of one of the more convoluted Poirot mysteries I can recall.

Only one episode left, and then no more David Suchet as Poirot. :(

I find I have very fond memories of Jeremy Bret as Sherlock Holmes, David Suchet as Hercule Poirot, and Joan Hickson as Miss Marple. Other actors have performed in this roles, and done very well, but these actors are the ones I picture when I hear Sherlock Holmes, Poirot, and Miss Marple. I loved watching Mystery! on my local PBS station.

How is the story this season? I have not watch American Horror Story since season four. I think I started season five, but got distracted.

Burn Notice (2008)

Finished season 2. Only 16 episodes.

Bruce Campbell has an autobiography where the title refers to his chin, but he has got a great voice. Very easy to listen to.

Michael's mom still acts clueless at times. Sam is suppose to take her to Disneyland to keep her out of harms way. She spends her time putzing around the house complaining, and it is only when she offers Sam a beer and he refuses that she fully understand it is really serious. Unfortunately it is too late as the bad guys surround the house. It is both nerve racking and funny.

Poirot (2014)

Season 13, episode 5 - Curtain: Poirot's Last Case

Sadly, the last episode.

IMDB Description wrote:
An ailing Poirot returns to Styles with Hastings nearly three decades after solving their first mystery there in order to prevent a serial killer from claiming more victims.

I think it gets to what makes the audience squirm. This time, it's about a woman trying to get pregnant, which has all the terrifying implications you'd expect! The best horror makes you horrified at the deepest level.
