Last night we watched Max Headroom [1987–1988] Season 2, Episode 6: "Neurostim".

This episode's theme was:
- What if a company could sell you something you enjoyed using but which
+>planted subliminal urges to buy their products

I recommend Max Headroom to anyone who likes Science Fiction with substance.

Episodes of Coronation Street from early April 1981

Deirdre tells Mike Baldwin that their relationship is over. Mike, utterly unfazed, arranges to entertain Sonia Price in his new flat (Sonia to do the cooking), but Mr Baldwin Senior arrives unexpected and uninvited from London to put a damper on things.

Fred Gee proposes marriage to Eunice. She had been uninterested initially, but when she hears that Fred is in line to manage his own pub, she eagerly accepts. The brewery had also specified that the post could only be given to a married man. There could be problems ahead here, methinks...

The newspaper delivery strike at the Kabin ends - Len Fairclough and the 16-year-old strike leader had been utterly intransigent, but Rita Fairclough mediates with some impressive negotiating skills.

Last night we watched all six episodes of Doctor Who: The Abominable Snowmen [2022].

It is an animated reconstruction of the 1967 Doctor Who story of which only a recording of the second of the six episodes still exists. It features the second Doctor, played by Patrick Troughton.

I really like their artwork for the animated reconstructions. They were not trying to make it look like anything more than animation but their style is delightful. This story, however, contains an exception; much of this story takes place in a monastery in the Himalayas and it has a statue of Buddha which often appears photographically pictured.

Just watched Wellington Paranormal, season 4, episode 3, The Coolening.

Officers Minoque and O'Leary investigate a jacket that makes people confident and cool.

Wellington Paranormal is a mockumentary about two New Zealand police officers, officers Minoque and O'Leary. It is a spinoff of the two characters that appeared in the movie mockumentary What We Do in the Shadows by Jemaine Clement and Taika Waititi. The two officers investigate a wide range of absurdly funny paranormal occurrences. I love this show.

I also love the TV series What We Do in the Shadows.

Wellington Paranormal can be seen on HBOMax (seasons 1-4) and on the CW (seasons 3 and 4).
What We Do in the Shadows, the movie, can be seen on Amazon Prime Video (personal comment, annoying). It use to be on Hulu.
What We Do in the Shadows, the series, can be seen on Hulu (seasons 1-4).

It looks like I'm going to have to save my money to buy the movie.

I have not seen The Abominable Snowmen, though I know the story from the Doctor Who novels from the 1980s.

I like the animated reconstructions as well. It is too bad, though understandable, that so many Doctor Who tapes were recycled by the BBC. Also, BBC America has sadly pulled funning for the reconstructions.

I have Doctor Who: Shada on DVD. I should look into getting the others while I can.

Episodes of Coronation Street from the second half of April 1981

Most of these episodes revolve around the travails of veteran Street resident Elsie Tanner (also known as Elsie Howard). While working as manageress of the local cafe, she meets up with one Wally Randle there, and takes a fancy to him. When Wally agrees to be her lodger, Elsie thinks she has it made with him, only to be brutally disillusioned when he declines her advances. She then sinks into a depression, isolating herself in her house and neglecting herself, until Bet Lynch takes her for a night out at a local pub. There she meets Bill Fielding, and takes him home for a night of passion, before realizing she's made a dreadful mistake and asking him to leave. He refuses to do so, and to make matters worse, Bill's wife tracks him down to Elsie's house, and the pair have a frightful row, utterly trashing the place.

Poor Elsie. She would have been mid-to-late 50s at this point, and still looked exceptionally attractive for her age, but seemed destined to be unhappy and frustrated in life.

On the previous round of classic Doctor Who DVD releases I made the mistake of not buying them when they first became available. There is so much Doctor Who to watch that I didn't get around to buying some of them 'til years after they were released—and much to my horror, some of them were sold out and no longer available.

Now they are releasing the classic Who in BD sets and I buy them when they become available. I've filled the gaps in my collection and saw some stories I'd missed. Plus, the BD sets take less shelf space than the DVD videos. Now my collection is complete from Hartnell through Smith, excluding about a dozen lost stories. I'm hoping that Capaldi and later will be available for a while.

Coronation Street, five episodes from May 1981

Ken Barlow and Deirdre Langton tell Uncle Albert (with whom Ken lives) that they are to be married, but Albert is shocked to learn that Ken will be moving out, leaving him to fend for himself in his eighties.

Vera Duckworth is thrown out of the house by husband Jack, who is fed up of her going out with other men. She shows up at the Tilsley household, and Ivy reluctantly takes her in.

Elsie Tanner continues to wallow in her depressed state, and discovers that she has been sacked from her job at the cafe for taking too many days off.

Fred Gee fails to get the pub landlord's job he was expecting, but his marriage to Eunice Nuttall goes ahead. A potentially major incident occurs when a stripper turns up at his stag evening, and is escorted back home by Fred. Eunice finds out and is not best pleased....

Fred is a truly horrible character, and Eunice is something of a scheming gold-digger, but compared to him, she's a bit of a treasure, lol.

On HBOMax

Ghosts - Series 1, Episode 1

Its always tough to get through a pilot episode. The fact I typed "Series" instead of "Season" is a clue that it is British. BBC One

This is comedy about a young couple, mansion the wife inherits, and the eight or so ghosts from over the centuries that haunt the mansion. The ghosts try to ineffectively scare them away when they learn the couple plan to turn the mansion into a hotel. By the end of episode 1, I found the program funny. After being pushed out a window, the wife can see and hear the ghosts. The ghosts' attempts are pretty funny. Currently watching episode 2. It's laugh out loud funny.

Last night we watched the remaining two episodes of Max Headroom [1987–1988]

Season 2, Episode 7: "Lessons".

This episode's theme was:
- What happens to the children on the fringes of society if even a basic education costs money?

Season 2, Episode 8: "Baby Grobags".

This episode's theme was:
- If Medical Science allows pregnancies to be completely handled in a commercial laboratory,
+-+>and eugenics becomes part of the process,
+-+-+>could organizations recruit high-quality staff by stealing babies from the lab?

Max Headroom was broadcast in the U.S. in a very bad time-slot, Friday nights against Dallas [1978–1991] and Miami Vice [1984–1989], and it was not competitive against those two shows. So, Max Headroom got poor ratings and was cancelled.

As sometimes happens with syndicated series the episodes are sometimes presented in different orders in different contexts. It appears "Lessons" is the intended final episode. And it contains the series' appropriate last words:

I recommend Max Headroom to anyone who likes Science Fiction with substance.

Coronation Street, the last three episodes from May 1981

Fred and Eunice Gee return from their honeymoon (in Rhyl, lol), and take up residence at the Rovers Return, which is to be their temporary marital home until Fred gets his own pub. Sharing living quarters with the pair (especially Eunice) quickly begins to drive Annie Walker to despair.

Brian and Gail Tilsley become friendly with another young couple (Colin and Sue) from their estate, but it all turns sour very quickly when Colin makes a pass at Gail, who rejects his advances and informs her husband.

That is an impressive collection. I always wanted to collect Doctor Who. I have all, or nearly all, of the classic episodes on VHS from PBS in the 1980s and early 1990s. However, I just don't have a reliable VHS player anymore.

I have all the new Doctor Who, from Christopher Eccleston to series 12 with Jody Whittaker.

I not sure I'm going to get the classic episodes, but I agree, BD is the way to go. I can still watch classic Doctor Who on BritBox.

TV Episodes I just watched...

Ghosts
Series 1, episodes 4, 5, and 6 (end of series 1 of 3)

The ghosts are really funny, and sometimes very annoying and loud. There is little overlap between the two. I would still recommend it because it can be hysterically funny.
