Samurai West, Episode 11 of 'The Baron' (1966)

World War II rears its ugly head in 1966 when a British former POW murders a Japanese man who had been the Commandant of his prison camp. The latter's servant, an old-school devotee of the Samurai code, takes matters into his own hands with a view to avenging his master's death, but hasn't reckoned with the intervention of The Baron. After getting a number of Mannering specials in the face and coming off second best, the servant decides there's only one course of action he can take.....

Both of the male 'Japanese' characters in this episode are played by British actors wearing make-up, which was not untypical of the era.

Mannering's shop has a video recorder for security purposes. This must be a very early use of the technology, as home video was not available to the general public for another decade.

The Maze, Episode 12 of 'The Baron' (1966)

Some scenes from this, which are almost surrealistic, remind me of an episode of 'The Avengers' from which the idea may have been borrowed (or vice versa?). The Baron is drugged after crashing his car, and everything he recollects the next day takes the form of disjointed nightmarish flashbacks.

Anyway, when his mental haze clears and he puts together the pieces, he uncovers a plot to assassinate a top American general on a golf course, and naturally succeeds in thwarting it with seconds to spare. The chief baddie at least has the five-star honour of being shot by Mannering with his own high-powered rifle, rather than getting the routine three-star right hook treatment.

A Channel 4 sitcom called Black Books, which I'd never seen before. It's of very patchy quality, but there are a few good laughs here. Probably won't be able to watch more than a handful of episodes, as Bill Bailey is so damned irritating.

Portrait Of Louisa, Episode 13 of 'The Baron' (1966)

Most of this is pretty unimaginative and not very engaging, and the characters are a bit dull as well. A rich client of The Baron is being blackmailed, she is killed half way through the episode, but it can't be suicide (because Mannering says so). The Baron then works his way through the list of suspects, paying each of them a visit and whacking them in the mouth, but something still doesn't add up. It turns out that the key person behind the whole business is the least likely person you (or I) would have suspected - this is more like something from 'The Saint', LOL.

This episode could have been a lot more interesting if the director had made more use of Lisa Thomas, who was in the Hammer film One Million Years BC, but she only appears here for 18 seconds....

She-Hulk: Attorney at Law.

Rubbish series. I'm only watching it because I have a girl crush on Jameela Jamil.

There's Someone Close Behind You, Episode 14 of 'The Baron' (1966)

The Baron witnesses the shooting of a police officer during an attempted robbery at a museum, and thenceforward is the target of the gang who need to hunt him down and eliminate him. The final showdown between Mannering and the killer is quite interesting, set amidst eerie derelict buildings and having the flavour of something from the Wild West. There are fewer fisticuffs from Mannering here, and in fact the ending is slightly comical when his opponent falls into a hole and has to humiliatingly beg The Baron to rescue him.
