Joe Lampton picks himself up off the floor, and lands himself a top management job at a textile firm, after conning its owner into employing him. He even gets back together with his wife right at the end.

The political backstabbing and familial treachery would be too much for me if it were not for the comedic surprises. For instance there is an assassin. He has a distinctive scar on his face. Only one person on the side of the King, one of his guards, has seen him. He decides to draw a picture of him. He sets out in all seriousness to recreate the face of this person in ink. With earnest flare, he starts the drawing. Dissatisfied, he crumples it up and tosses it. Again he tries. This time he seems satisfied. Then another guard comes in moaning because one of the court maids told him she did not like him. The the camera switches to an angle where we can see the drawing. It's a stick figure whose face looks a bit like Philip or Terrance from Southpark. Laugh out loud. I really expected something resembling a face with a scar.
Still a good story.

Man At The Top

The first two episodes of the second series, June 1972. Joe Lampton had got back together with his wife Susan at the end of the first series, but here he splits up with her again in the first episode, only to patch things up shortly afterwards, managing to fit in a couple more affairs in the meantime, oh well...

On the business front, he settles an industrial dispute at one of his company's factories in Yorkshire, but soon finds himself redundant after a takeover. He then manages to get himself re-employed by the new company, after pulling a fast one on them.

This is an unbelievably devious plot, and rather contrived, it has to be said, and this series is coming to resemble a 1970s version of The Power Game from the 1960s. Maybe that's exactly what the producers had in mind.

Excellent story. It takes awhile to get through, but it was enjoyable.
Time to read a book.

Actor Hae Sun Shin does a remarkable performance as Kim So Yong (the Queen) when inhabited and not inhabited by Jang Hong Hwan, a 21 century male chef. The premise is their souls swap bodies across time. There is also a period where both the character Jang Bong Hwan and Kim So Yong co-inhabit the same body. Hae Sun Shin was also in See You in My 19th Life. Wonderful characterization and acting.

Man At The Top

Episodes 3 and 4 from the second series (1972). The show is definitely picking up pace now, Joe having affairs with three different women in these two episodes, while still being married to Susan. The 'lucky' ladies are played by Stephanie Beacham, Wendy Gifford and Hilary Dwyer. His business dealings are similarly hectic and so complicated that I was struggling to work out what was going on in the fourth episode. It takes quite a leap of faith to believe that this version of Lampton is in any way connected to the character played by Laurence Harvey in the 1950s and 1960s films, who was a lot more straightforward and predictable in comparison.

Man At The Top, Series 2, Episodes 5 and 6 (1972)


This series just gets better and better. Lampton's wife and daughter are involved in a crash on the M1, resulting in the death of the latter. This pushes him into a crisis point in his life, in which he resigns from his high-powered job, separates from his wife yet again, and returns to his home town of Dufton in Yorkshire looking for some meaning to his life. He spends a good deal of time with Doctor Helen Reid (played by Janet Key) who tried to save his daughter's life, and she turns out to be just about the only woman under 40 in this series that he hasn't gone to bed with, well not yet anyway.

Joe Lampton finally gets into bed with Dr Helen Reid, though it took him two or three episodes to do so. The series is kind of predictable in that way. The relationship hits the rocks when Helen persuades him to talk to a careers consultant who wants to 'repackage' him. That was never going to work out.

Joe hits rock bottom when he takes a job as a salesman selling chocolate bars to shopkeepers. That was never going to last very long either.

In the third episode, he gets a high-flying job as deputy to property magnate Sir George Hudson, thanks perhaps to the latter's new wife, Lady Janet Hudson, putting in a good word for him. Janet was one of Lampton's former mistressses, and when this gets out, he finds himself fighting for survival yet again...
