The Haunting of Hill House (2018) on Netflix
10 episodes, watched over several days.
One of my nephews recommended it to me, and to my amazement, I found it in my Play List already. What's more, I watched it back in 2018, and it may be documented in this thread somewhere.
It was better than I remember, although I don't remember much. I like it better then the version with Liam Neeson, which came out in 1999 and was called The Haunting, but that version was was not as good as the 1963 version of The Haunting directed by Robert Wise. The 1963 version is a masterpiece.
This version of Hill House is good as well. Shirley Jackson's novel is chopped up into a new story with the important points about the house remaining the same. The story is not told in a linear fashion. It jumps from the present to the past, and when in the past, sometimes there are glimpses of the future. So we see five children when they were children, when they lived in Hill House, and as adults, dealing in their own way with what happened in Hill House. It's good. I personally thought it has a slow start, but it wraps up nicely. The slow start could be me adjusting to the story. In the end, it all makes sense.
My order of preference, from best to good. Again, my opinion, not a universal truth, and there are only three versions of the book that I know of...
The Haunting (1963)
The Haunting of Hill House (2018)
The Haunting (1999) - It was okay, but the original version left much to the imagination. The photography, acting, and sound made it scary. The 1999 version used CGI. I saw this in the theater, and was quite excited to see it at the time. I recall the acting was good. It had good production value, but I suffer from the sin of comparing it with the original film, instead of something on its own merit. I should watch it again.
