I'm looking to see if anyone here likes listening to classical music, and if so who and what do you like to listen to?

Casually. I don't pretend to know anything about it, but I've bought classical CDs and frequently use it as background music when I'm reading. Favorite is Chopin.

Mendelssohn
Paganini
Schubert's Songs (Lieder)
Chopin's piano pieces

Basically I like the stuff they were making just before the Romantic period.

And Ragtime!

And Viennese Operetta

I don't have a set favorite, but I listen to it a lot. Especially on long car rides, I just turn on npr and chill out

My favorites are Sibelius, Mahler, Mozart, and Wagner. And I always try to listen to NPR's overnight classical with Peter Van De Graff. I don't like everything he plays, of course, but a majority of it is excellent.

I love classical. Mozart, Bach, Beethoven, Vivaldi, Wagner, Pachelbel, Rossini, Tartini... I've been trying to get into the habit of seeking out more.

It can be really good for studying or reading. Any music with lyrics usually distracts me when I'm trying to do those things, haha.

Modern classical (particularly the more experimental stuff) is one of my favourite genres. I don't listen to much from before the 1900s, though.

Some favourites (with an example of their work in brackets... not necessarily a favourite, just a good recording I could find on youtube):

Edgard Varèse (Ionisation)
Frank Zappa (The Yellow Shark Overture)
Harry Partch (Arrest, Trial and Judgment)
Henry Cowell (Pulse)
Iannis Xenakis (Oresteïa)
Igor Stravinsky (Movements for Piano and Orchestra)
John Cage (Ryoanji)
Karlheinz Stockhausen (Stimmung)
La Monte Young (The Second Dream of the High-Tension Line Stepdown Transformer)
Lou Harrison (Main Bersama-Sama)
Steve Reich (Eight Lines)
Terry Riley (Sunrise of the Planetary Dream Collector)
Toru Takemitsu (November Steps)

.

Le' rue Delashay is a great neo-classical musician. Very dark and powerful stuff.

My favorite classical music is minimalist piano, like Ludovico Einaudi, Philip Glass, and John Cage.

Not sure if I'd call his work classical or not, but I love Philip Glass. I've been meaning to check out more John Cage and Karlheinz Stockhausen.
I also love Indian classical music, especially when it's very improvisational. Ravi and Anoushka Shankar are both amazing.

Oh yes! Especially Rachmaninoff, Haydn, Chopin, Bach, and Saint-Saens.

I started to enjoy listening to classical music again when I heard one of mozart's pieces. Then I moved on to Bach and Beethoven. 8)

I like to go to the symphony 2 or 3 times a year. Haydn is one of my favorites, and I really like Mozart's sonatas.
