Why does it seem as though some people cannot conceive of others, if they have opposing views, to be capable of sound reasoning? What kind of absurd posturing is that?

I think that's what they call Theory of Mind difficulties.

It's only natural. If you have access to all the available information, yet are utterly incapable of arriving at the right conclusions... you may be deficient in some manner.

It depends still upon what sources one considers trustworthy and upon the constructed methods of interpretation that one develops as a child.

Really? Would you mind explaining that in more detail?

I don't know if that is true. some people have different "facts"

Well... If somebody believes the stuff in the funny pages, I'll probably think they're just an idiot. We already have multiple active threads about this, though.

There are a lot of topics discussed on PPR that have no "right" conclusion but still people call each other deficient with saddening regularity.

Precisely, it matters not to some as to whether there's a "standard acceptable conclusion", but just whether or not one is in agreement or disagreement. For issues with a popular answer the bullying is more vitriolic, but even without such they are still willing to perform their harassment.

One man's available information is another man's erroneous misunderstanding of the world.

Very true. That it's natural is not to say it's right by any means. It's just how the human mind works in a lot of cases. If we disagree with the information, it's the result of an erroneous misunderstanding. And if you look at the same things and come to different conclusions, one of you must be wrong. It's always the other guy.

Nobody has access to all the right data [some are on the left side of the elephant - that is an elephant joke]. AND if you had exactly the same data set, you still have to weight them.

Heretics are far from brainless - I am the Universal heretic and smart as paint and I should know.

What is brainless is when one heretic cannot sit down with another heretic and have a polite, interested and fruitful conversation. At the end of which they will likely disagree more, but they will disagree better.

And the bolded part ought to be what PPR's about, not bashing each other with mindless insults because one person didn't say something perfectly right or that one's opinion is somehow supposedly offensive in an impersonal manner.

well, quite, but remember Vexcalibur's "how dare we be different" Ungleichgeschaltete Green Monkeys have to be pelted with dung by those who have no actual ideas. Actual serious [interspersed with genuine humor] interchanges for mutual benefit are no fun for some - what's the fun if no excvrement flies? For others - like my brother - there is no profit if the other does not collapse and lie belly up like a subordinate cat.

"Heresy" comes from a Greek word which means "choice". See this fact and conclude what you want.

Choosing a source for valid viewpoints and information is pretty vital in any discussion. Some people merely have no talent in that area.
