Throughout my adult life I’ve never developed the need for organization as I relied on my
memory for all sorts of things. From never balancing a checkbook to never putting things
back in their proper place. I can remember when I last used that tool and know exactly
where it is so months or even years later so I can track it walk right up to it if need be.

This does lead to a very cluttered existence and both home and work.

Is this a typical aspie trait?

It's typical for me. I rely on my memory more than organization. I always find things remembering the last time I used them. My room and my desk are always very cluttered, but nothing ever gets lost.

Ohhh, one of the FIRST coping skills I learned was to keep lists/NEVER rely on my memory!! ! DH is always asking about the checkbook when we are out & I have to tell him (time & time & time & time again) that I keep the register on the computer & I wouldn't even hazard a GUESS. (burned myself in the past w/bad checkbook registry skills....)

btw, Persian, I LOVE your avatar!

Yeah, I've got the memory of a goldfish with Alzheimer's.

This applies to me too.

Even when my things are only a little scattered or disorganized, I feel I would lose track of some of them if I put away everything in its proper place.

I used to think that I could just remember everything I needed to do in my head. After failing out of college 3 too many times I have come to realize this is just not the case.

I'm not sure if it is typical, but it describes me perfectly.

How can you describe me so well :D
I have this weird memory that makes me remember stuff that no-body remembers even though they were there.

I also rely on memory over organization. I never write anything down, because it's so much easier to keep everything in my head.

This is me but BECAUSE of this I end up losing things.

You would think I could remember where I left them. I usually do know where most things are, even when everything is a mess but when I'm disorganized I tend to LEAVE things carelessly behind.

Not good to do, outside of your home.

My memory is so-so.
I've been trying to improve it, but stress IS a memory reducer! :(

Right now I'm starting to learn how to use compartmentalized memory. I practice it by remembering people's license numbers at work. Break things down into groups and there you go. It's keeping my mind organized like a mofo.

I have extremely good spacial awareness for remembering where objects are. I often can tell someone where an object they are looking for that I glimpsed weeks ago. Our house is a bit of a mess and things often get buried under the latest project.

On the other hand I would be lost if I did not use a scheduler. I loose track of time and when things are supposed to occur. I could tell you several locations I saw an item in over the last month, but I often have no clue which was the last location I saw it in.

First of all, That Was Hilarious. Seriously.

Now on to the real business: I am the same way (Referring to the Original Post) I always remember where I have put things and very rarely keep a specific place for anything.

That's why it frustrates me so much when my mom moves something that I left somewhere and know exactly where it was :x And then she (Having the memory of a goldfish with Alzheimer's  ) can't remember the place she put it

But I always find it in the end... Except for that one controller cable :?
