I get a text message on my phone this afternoon from my pastor. He was wanting me to purchase a Google Play card so he could send to a sick friend in Pittsburgh. I thought something was fishy, since he is earning a lot more money than me, since i’m Collecting SSDI.. I just happened to be on Facebook when the church secretary posted a message saying if anyone got a message from Pastor with a phone number in the 717 area code (which is south central PA) to please ignore. The message I got was from number in the 412 area code, which is Pittsburgh (since he and his wife are metro Pittsburgh natives, and the three of us are alumni of the same college, also outside of Pittsburgh. So, I called the church office and left him a message. He calls me back a few minutes later, and tells me i’m the 4th person today that has gotten that text supposedly from him. From what both of us can figure, since we both spent most our careers in IT (he at IBM, me at several firms, before ending my career employed as a contractor employee for Apple), someone got a hold of the congregation’s phone list, with by paper copy (since it’s available at the church’s information table, or, before it was deleted, from the church’s website), or from the weekly church bulletin, which contains the order of service for the Sunday Service, as well as announcements. My phone number is in the announcements, since I’m still needing a ride to services, as I no longer drive and there’s no bus service here to my place on the weekend. What can I or the church do to prevent this in the future? Not much, except change the announcement in the bulletin to contact the church office if any one in the congregation wants to contact me.
