Just curious, is anyone on Wrong Planet also in the furry fandom? For those who are not, what do you know about furries? What's your opinion?

Furries are people who like to take on the appearance of their favourite animal character from a cartoon, movie or a video game that they like. I was Sid from Flushed Away for a few years. :O)

I take the identity of a original character called mike the cat. You will find that most furries prefer to take on the appearence of their own original characers

Also, my furaffinity page is the button on the bottom WWW

I have never had any interest in the furry fandom, though I am familiar with it through conventions and from listening to my furry friends talk about it. I've even seen fanfiction and webcomics with furry characters. It generally seems to have a lot of negative hype about it, though (especially on 4chan!), probably because the vast majority of people assume that all furries have furry fetishes, which is an unfortunate (and rather mean) assumption.

I draw cartoons of Disney-esque animal characters and Halloween is my favorite holiday, but I hear too much negativity about Furries. When little kids dress up in animal costumes it's cute, but when adults do it it's considered sick, weird, and creepy. :( Psychologists think you feel you have to hide your true self behind a mask because you you're embarrassed or ashamed to be yourself. Well I don't want society to think I'm an even bigger freak than they do already so I guess I'll reserve my furriness for Halloween and maybe the Santa Claus parade (a couple of years ago I dressed up like Fiona from the Shrek movies for the parade in my city.)

Yes, exactly. I am usually secretive about being a furry, the only people knowing I am a furry being close friends. My parents have no clue. They would be ok with it, except they would probably google it and pull up a whole bunch of yiff and filth on their computer by accident. My older brother would kill me if he found out about me being a furry, or if he found my desk full of furry art that I draw.

Ironically, no such "furry fetish" exists to my knowledge, it is probably simply a way to get crap past the radar or part of the culture. Any fandom or geek culture that involves lots of fanfic and visual art will produce porn. Also, few people are smart enough to realize that the logical fallacy "No True Scotsman" applies to furries just as much as any other fandom or group of people. Just look at this site. People are complete morons when it comes to furries. http://www.antifurrycoalition.org/Home.html

I'm a furry. I've only been in the fandom since May, and I already have some IRL friends in the fandom. I'm part of a furmeet group too. I joined not because I have an obsession with cartoons or anthros but rather because I figured that, as a biology nerd, I'd fit in among them and gain some friends that had similar interests to mine. I was right. I saw them as weird outside the fandom and I still see many of them as weird within it, but I'm used to that breed of weird by now. I don't take the fandom very seriously. It's just a tool to make more friends and a way to express myself rather than a lifestyle or something spiritual. It's all very ironic because I used to somewhat hate them and make fun of them mercilessly. But in truth, I've always been undecided towards them. It took me a while to realize that they were all just regular nerds and not the monsters the anonymous painted them as while I was rolling with them. I still troll and I still make fun of the fandom. I was afraid to tell anyone at first, but now a lot of my friends know and my family knows(except my dad because he believes what he saw in Entourage  ).

I might actually make a fursuit, something I wouldn't have done months ago, just to try it and because my friend wants partners to suit with at cons. He knows how to make them. I already had a Dilophosaurus fursona named Clark Forrester, but now I'm designing a mammalian one. Just not sure what I want it to be. I'm stuck between a Dhole, a Jackal, and an otter.
My fursona and my persona for making music:

Also, dancing in a fursona is one of the greatest and most amusing things one can do.

Just don't worry about what others think of you. Are you going to pass just because you are worried about what ignorant people will think of you?

I hang out with a bunch of Post-anonymous trolls and they don't hate me for being a furry. They find it amusing sometimes that I'm a furry. They tell me that I'm their favorite dinosaur. One of them even made a music video dedicated to me. I can't show it because it has some ideologically sensitive material unfortunately :(. I'll just make it a link. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BW_fNLQ8kpQ&feature=channel_video_title for those that would like to see it.

Don't be fooled. There are lots of fetishistic furries in the fandom that are particularly open about stuff, but that's something I had to get used to. Not only am I not into any of these fetishes or yiff for that matter, I'm not very sexual in the first place. I frown upon people who are particularly open about anything sexual. Most of them are open, but might mention it in passing. Some make reference to it all the time. They are the annoying ones that contribute to the bad rep we get. And it is very unnerving, let me assure you guys. And I enjoy making fun of them or trolling them to the extent of my ability.

My friend used to tell me that I make fun of furries so much that I'll probably become one. He was right. Irony.

Anyways, part of what got me into the fandom was music. I became more relaxed around the fandom thanks to Renard Queenston's music and his 20 or so aliases he's used for making music, most of them being anthro characters of some kind. He's one of the rare furries that express their fursonas' personalities through music rather than art and/or writing. He can't draw, so his girlfriend draws for him.

I'm sorry, but that is really flawed logic. Using their logic, I am secretly a fundamentalist because I post on Fundies Say The Darndest Things.

I think it's weird. I have no real opinion on furry fandom. No qualms, but no opinion.

1) Too much.
2) I think it's perverse. It makes me question whether or not it's time for the human race to be "re-set." But so do a lot of things.

Sorry, but you asked.
