No, their unattractive obesity was overlooked because they were wealthy. In the olden days, food was expensive, and thus being fat was a sign that you were wealthy and/or powerful. This is much like how today some young women will go for an old man because he is rich. It was not the fat that was attractive, it was the wealth it signified. And today food is cheap and plentiful, so being fat no longer signifies wealth, hence the change in attitude.

If I had the choice between a nice, pleasant significantly overweight woman and a slim but horrible one, I would chose the former.

Looks really are not that important. If someone is ugly/beautiful on the outside, this can alter drastically if you like what is on the inside I think.

Yes this is true. Which is why if you are very lonely, and looking for a relationship, you should go out with someone regardless of what they look like (at least once). If you really like someone they will end up looking good to you and if you dislike them they will look ugly.

You can't make yourself physically attracted to someone. There has to be something there in the first place. Otherwise at best you're going to become friends, not mates.
