It sounds like doom metal probably of the stoner metal sub-type, which is in a sense related to psychedelic rock...Black Sabbath is considered one of the first doom metal bands though the term was not around when they came about so they were just referred to as heavy metal. But they can be considered stoner metal as well, basically stoner metal is doom metal with the most psychedelic influence...much like Black Sabbath. The reason it's called that though as the fans are typically people who smoke cannabis and enjoy tripping but a more accurate definition would probably be psychedelic doom metal.

At least that's what I gather from everything I've read on the topic, I was very, very obsessed with metal and found it fun learning about all the different sub-genres and sub-types and stuff most people probably don't care about.

Space metal? I think most people's ears would start to bleed listening to this live! With good headphones you don't just hear it, you can almost feel it vibrating through your brain.

I know that it is stoner rock not really metal, I'm just not sure where the line is between psychedelic and some stoner rock bands. Most of clutch's music isn't very psychedelic but that song kinda seemed like it might be.

Yes, that's kind of an issue I have with "psychedelic" music/culture in general. I know that psychedelic drugs have obviously been an influence on this kind of culture, but I actually don't do any drugs myself and take a rather dim view of them (although I will admit to a small amount of "experimentation" as a teenager or whatever). I don't judge other people, though, for what they choose to do in their personal lives. I figure if Frank Zappa could play the kind of music he played and not be into drugs, then there's no inherent problem in my liking psychedelic music.

Creating sonic art to induce some kind of odd, unique, or exciting emotional experience through the senses requires a lot more effort than just injecting some simple chemical into your brain.

"stoner" sounds like a pejorative label that was later embraced, similar to how "punk", "grunge", and "shoegaze" came into being. Still, "stoner" somehow seems to come across as more dismissive than the other labels to me. This is probably due to our societies low view of the "pot head" stereotype.

To be honest you don't need to use it, you could easily say bands like yob or ufomammut or bongzila are sludge bands, and you wouldn't be wrong. Same with saying kyuss are hard rock or saying sleep and electric wizard are doom metal bands. Personally I've grown to not really considering stoner it's own sub-genre anymore. I think of it more as a genre tag just like you would say something is atmospheric, epic, or symphonic.

I'd say Ufomammut is sludge and post-metal. Pelican has similar sounding stuff but they are not 100% metal.

I'd say Ufomammut is sludge and post-metal. Pelican has similar sounding stuff but they are not 100% metal.

Post-metal is a subset of sludge, some also refer to as post-sludge .
