It is not OCD.

The obsessions in OCD are recurring unpleasant or intrusive thoughts - e.g. doubts and worries. So many people with OCD obsess about germs on their hands, or things like that. OCD is an anxiety disorder, and the obsessions reflect that - they are accompanied by anxiety: "Did I really lock the door? I better check yet again." "Do I have germs on my hands? I better wash my hands yet again."

Playing a song you enjoy over and over is very different.

Your "obsession" is more like the behaviour of people with ADHD and ASD who easily become fixated on something they enjoy, and can stay glued to it for hours. In some ways, this is like stimming - a comforting or pleasant repetition. People with ADHD, for example, can be fixated on a video game because it gives them instant gratification (delayed gratification is a central problem for ADHD). Likewise people with ASD tend to like routine, familiarity, and comforting repetition. Playing a song you like repeatedly gives you predictable sensations - the opposite of sensory overload.

Yeah.

This is at least somewhat common in ADHD, from what I've come across in anecdotes.

It seems the repetitiveness is an attempt to get it in there, or to burn it in there. The normal "embedding" of a thought doesn't soak in, as it seems to be for the mean or the average person. The guy next door is done with the song with one play.

I liken it to stimming in ADHD also, I can even think of the same pleasant thoughts in a loop, repeatedly ( and I don't have sensory overload). I think stimming here in this, is the means to move or think forward, to get off a no load /underload track, and move into a 'load'.( All an unconscious effort.)

It might be stimulating an 'open' pleasure center of the brain. The center doesn't close for some reason-- as was mentioned "a delayed gratification." Sooner with the majority, and later with this ^. Eventually the thought does close.

I think it is a means to stimulate the 'lack' in arousal with inattentive ADHD. As proof it would interesting to see if the other type of ADHD( hyperactive) engage in this.

I know that a lot of you do this--and I figured almost everyone does it until I asked my friend. I can listen to the same song for hours and days without getting sick of it. I usually stop listening to it if I find a new song that I like even more. For instance, an example of my Last.FM

Is that weird?

i have characteristics of OCD (shrink focused on it being an aspect of AS and didn't attach the full label to me). i do this - i listen to the same song over and over and over and over and... well, you get the idea. it's mostly when i find myself estremely stressed or depressed, and the song offers comfort of a sort. so in a way, it might almost be more like a stim than a compulsion. not sure though.

it appears that many people with OCD do have this tendency, but that is not to say that the behaviour itself is an indication of OCD. it is also fairly common with people who have autism... but again not necessarily an indication of ASD.

I go through phases of listening to the same artist/genre for way too long and then grow tired of it:
- Spent four years mainly listening to rap music, now I know the lyrics to most songs(not many spanish rap singers out there and not many good songs have been released recently) but after a couple of songs I have to switch to something completely different.

-Went through a green day phase that then developed into an alt rock phase. I have all their albums and can still listen to their songs non stop(I just find other music more entertaining since Ive been listening to them for over 6 years).

-Going through a female alt rock phase. Mainly listening to florence and the machine/flyleaf/evanescence/alanis morisette right now.

Have some OCD tendencies so both things could be related.

Listening to the same song is not necessarily part of OCD. If this particular song that you listened to was universally praised and you only listened to it once per day for a certain number of days, then that's not a problem. However, if you listen to the same song over constantly enough to the point that it significantly interferes with your daily functioning, then that could be a sign of OCD.

I just love music period. I've always played albums over and over, and songs over and over. As a kid I remember so many people that could not even get through listening to one song, and as an adult I still have known many people that can't get through one song. I remember one person I was riding in the car with they would be playing a song, and before the song ended they would change it to another song, and that was so annoying. I think when one plays a song over and over that means they have a good attention span. At least in my opinion. Right now I'm stuck on listening to Alex and My Ma by Girls.

I too listen to the same song over and over again. I don't know if it's OCD or ASD related or just really liking the song. But music has a very calming effect on me. Or stimulating, depending on the song.

If I'm stressed about something, or anxious, then listening to certain songs will help calm and bring order to my thoughts. If I'm feeling a certain emotion, then a certain song often matches that, so it gets played to death.

When I listen to songs, it's as though I have to and I can get quite agitated if I don't get to finish listening. I'm not sure if this is dislike of being stopped from stimming/having my relaxation method stopped or a compulsion. Either way, the top comments on YouTube would indicate that NTs are quite fond of replaying songs, too. Possibly not to the extent I do, but I shouldn't speak for them without knowing.

It has been around 4.5 years that ive been listining to the same minute and 50 seconds

Of it, is this normal? I mean im not crazy or anything , i just find that this beautifully composed solo has something soo deep, its soo mathematical and everything repeats itself in a wierd way... I myself cant find a reason to why im crazy over this song, i have about 10 versions of the song , live versions, my guitar covers ,ive even named myself " Fade" as a
Nickname i use it for everything, psn username fadetoblack89 (anyone who played black ops probably played against me and got raped im a fkn legend beast)

It probably helps with concentration, maybe listening to the same song could be considered a type of stimming. Do people find it absorbs their nervous energy?

Fixes my concentration like a vise. With soothing euphoria. All my life. Tonight, Yes' "Revealing Science of God" already 30 times. It is a 20-minute tune. Less burn w/ longer. Sometimes though I'll get pulled in by a 2-minute tune & go maybe 100x in an evening. In theory doing this should be hell. But, no, the opposite.

I would think so. I don't get distressed about doing it. I can stop if I want to and I know doctors here and my mother would call it OCD. I don't listen to the same song for hours and hours but I can with an album. But is feeling the urge to play it OCD?

I have been listening to Titanic music on youtube and I would play the same song over and over and over and it relaxes me. I just like the sound of it and then I got the album and haven't listened to the music on it since and I just go to my stereo and play it. But yet it won't play on repeat and I keep forgetting to repeat the song so I just end up listen to all the songs on it. I just feel it's one of my stims.

I get stuck on the same playlist because I don't know what else I could listen to.

I used to listen to the same song over and over again.

Repetitiveness isn't just an OCD thing. It's a very common symptom in autism.
Stacking things over and over, lining things up etc. I tend to do more of that though.

I just get a song in my head and then I have to listen to the whole album.
I made myself a rule long ago to listen to that song in my head and nothing else, and then, what the hey, I'll just listen to the whole album. Afterwards I enjoyed it so much I might just listen to it again, and again.

Listening to music helps me read and write so I don't want to put much thought into listening to something new.

Do you enjoy listening to same song over and over again? If yes, than it is probably not OCD. The obsessions in OCD are thoughts that make the person with it anxious, and the compulsions in OCD are actions the sufferer performs to rid them of anxiety.

I do the same as well, I had to disable my spotify alert thing on facebook because it was showing that I was listening to the same song over and over and some as*hole made fun of (I defriended him anyway but it was still embarrassing)
