When do people switch over from being single to being in a relationship on facebook?

I am confused on this topic because some people seem to do it the second they get asked out and other times it doesn't happen until someone is serious and been seeing each other for a while.

What is the ettique of the relationship status?

What if someone sends you a relationship request and you have been seeing each other but the other person refuses? How would that make you feel?

It is all a bit confusing.

Here's what I have learned from my own experience and watching others:

The relationship status is something the two persons should agree on, before either one changes their own status.

If one person, that is seeing another, just changes their relationship status without discussing it with the other, the other persion might see it as manipulating, or being self centered.

So: ask the other person, and do not change it unless you both agree on changing it.

Dunno. I was with a guy for a year but we both stayed single on facebook. He didn't want to "go public" /shrug

exactly. facebook is not a dating site so I don't care about indicating my relationship status/sexual orientation.

it's funny though how people treat facebook like the only true measure of reality - if you don't state your relationship status or don't post kids' pictures, they'd just assume you're single and childless. they all take it so freakin seriously! am I the only person who just wants to troll these people so bad?

Its Complicated (what it may mean):
1. breakup in process
2. unrequited love
3. love triangle
