The 2010s/Twenty Tens

Is it just me, or do most people not even realize that 2011 is a different decade from 2009? I never hear people say "this is the 2010s" or that stuff from the 2000s is outdated. Most people seem to just consider this the "millennium" still or Y2K-something. Like a 2001 mindset that won't go away.

However I did notice quite a major fashion and cultural change throughout 2008 and 2009. The mainstays of 90s music, like gangsta rap and post-grunge, finally died out and music became really synthy and 80s-like and the fashion became more colorful. Lately I have even noticed the big-frame glasses of the '80s and earlier decades returning into style.

Still, a lot seems pretty '00s. Reality TV is still huge, Family Guy and South Park are still on the air (the Simpsons is too, which makes today seem like 1989 in a strange way lol). Some people still use early 00s slang like "that's gay" and "that's ret*d" though there is new slang that appeared at the end of the '00s (epic fail, swag, etc).

Gay culture in general seems bigger now, I remember the early and mid 00s were still pretty homophobic. Even Eminem is down with gay people now. Which is great.

What would you say the style of the Tens is? Hipster? Dubstep? Rave? One thing I notice, is a lot of people wearing teal shirts. Never saw that in the late 90s and most of the 2000s.

I think it's too early to compare the 00's (what do they even call that decade) to the '10s. 2019 will probably be just as different from 2001 as 1999 was to 1981.

The thing is, in 1971, people did not feel like the 60s were still going on, in 1981, people hated the 70s, and by 1991 people were over the 80s. I didn't see a 90s backlash in 2001 and I'm not seeing a 00s backlash now (I am however, seeing a 90s backlash. Maybe things just change a little slower now?)

It doesn't really feel like a different decade to be honest. I suppose the changes that have occurred between 2009 and 2011 have been so small that it doesn't feel any different than it did a few years ago.

No it really doesn't. Honestly the 1980s are the last time that truly feels like it has a totally different vibe! Which is amazing because that's 3 decades ago now.

I haven't really noticed much of a change, either.

Soulless materialism has always been a mainstay of American culture. The "stilted imagination" bit is debatable.

The only movies I really like today are comedies, they are actually by far the most original films coming out now. I loved 'Paul', I thought it was a lot better than Superbad.

I've noticed a lot more girls wearing more '80s-ish tops in 2010 and 2011 than in 2009 (unless I just wasn't as observant back in '09 than I am now). I see Flashdance and various other tops that are styled after the '80s all the time now. I also think flare jeans are coming back into style (though I think skinny jeans are still dominant). I saw an Old Navy commercial about a month ago advertising flare jeans, and I've noticed more people at school wearing them. Other than that, nothing really feels any different from 2009.

My perception of the '00s (which, for me, would culturally encompass the years 2003 to 2007) is that fashion became a lot more feminized for both guys and girls. By that, I mean that clothing was worn tighter, as opposed to how people in the '90s tended to wear their clothing loosely. Ladies dressed a lot more femininely in the '00s, and they accessorized more.

The '80s revival was one of the big things of the '00s and seems to be continuing to this day, though there is visibly a lot of '90s nostalgia being expressed by some of the younger Millennials (though I'm uncertain whether or not there will be a '90s revival soon).

2010s turned out pretty funny, eh?

Culture: never heard much about the trans population until this decade; now they attract more cultural and political attention than the gay population. "People of color" is now a very popular phrase, apparently to include brown-skinned Latinos and Arabs as ethnic minorities in the West along with blacks (I don't recall ever hearing this phrase before the 2010s).

Fashion: SUPER BRIGHT NEON was resurrected from the '80s and early '90s! It's not quite as big now in 2018 as it was as, say, 2014-2015, but I still see it. Pretty sure that was rarer and considered more gaudy in the 2000s. Men's fashion: beards (yay!) and slick, over-styled, and over-neat 1930s hipster hairdos (nay!). Women's fashion: holes in the arms of tops are quite the thing now, which could be argued is slightly immodest. I even saw a woman at an independent fundamental Baptist church wear one of those earlier this year

The years between 2008-2011 were years of great personal loss for me. I lost my mother, a dog and three cats in that time period. Things didn't improve until 2013 and it was not until 2015 that I made any significant forward progress.
