I like Portishead. The newer album, Third, is a lot different from the old ones though. It's much darker, both musically and lyrically.

Her voice on the album closer almost sends a shiver down my spine.

If you're interested in something that sounds like a combination of Portishead and Pink Floyd, you should check out the band Archive.

Portishead always bored me a bit, but the last album has some great songs on it like "Machine Gun". Definitely more my bag than Dummy and the self-titled. If you like it I suggest some of the more out-there krautrock records like Can's Tago Mago, Neu!'s Neu! and Faust's IV.

Don't forget the Silver Apples influence.

Judging by the thrust of this thread so far, some of you might enjoy Pram, a little known English band on the Too Pure label

Cool!

And now for something completely different:

Arguably more sound art than music... pretty unusual though.

Careful with your speakers, some of the transients in these works are a bit sharp.

Not typical of the band but I think this is weird in a good way.

I liked that, a kinda upbeat Can meets the Beatles thing.

I just found this, I think this might qualify as unusual music.

Each string relates to one hexagram and there is a very specific order. The signs of the zodiac are also positioned around the harp in correspondence to the appropriate hexagrams."

Stick with it and take the journey - once you get beyond the apparent noise and chaos, everything is peace and order. 8)

This album definitely qualifies as weird. It's barely listenable a good share of the time, but if you're in the mood for dissonance...

Portishead has been described by some as "Trip-Hop." Other groups in this genre include Massive Attack and Life In Mono. I don't understand what would make one call it "weird", other than it isn't Black Eyed Peas, Lady Gaga, fill in the blank artist-that's-popular-this-fifteen-minutes. For weirder stuff, try digging a little deeper:

Primus
The Mothers Of Invention
Captain Beefheart
Azam Ali
Dead Can Dance
Nils Petter Molvaer
