I had no idea where to post this, so if the mods want to move it somewhere else, I wouldn't mind.

Bosco Verticale (vertical forest) is a plan to build a 27 storey tower in Milan, with trees planted on the edges of the floors.

This is what I mean: http://www.stefanoboeriarchitetti.net/?p=207

I'm thinking, it looks really cool - but what about insects and the lack of soil depth for the trees to put down roots. I'm interested to see how this would work out (if it does work out).

It certainly does look cool - I like the concept

Did anyone else think of a Japanese Bonsai tree when they saw the pic :?:

I love it. I hope we'll all live in futuristic skyscrapers like this one day. think of all the space we could save!

Really cool idea--I love incorporating vegetation into skyscrapers, and I think we'll be seeing more of it. But most of the vegetation I've seen incorporated into buildings is low-lying scrub, not... trees!

My initial thought was: What the dickens will the wind do to these trees [Tying into puddingmouse's though on soil depth/roots]? Hell, I got a maple outside my window, probably 10-15 years old, and we get enough wind outside that we have to stake it to keep it upright!

The idea of a vertical forest is very beautiful but I can see all kinds of problems with this type of building and trees.

At first glance I like it! But then like Taupey said there would be lots of issues practically surely. And also wouldn't it be rather dark?

No, it doesn't look very practical. I like the idea though.

Landscaper's nightmare. I think I'd rather build a house in a tree a la Swiss Family Robinson.

Cool idea, but I have doubts that it could actually work.

That would be so cool.

There goes another group of engineers, stealing my ideas.

In all seriousness, it's good to know I'm not the only one who has such great ideas.

I think it's a great idea. I'd live in one of those. :)

I like it!
When I was in Milan we went to this restaurant where they had trees and stuff growing inside the building, it was kind of strange but they had no insects though.

I've seen rooftop gardens but the it's always with plants that are potted. Those are important concerns that people usually solve by only having plants that can live in the constantly renewable system of a rooftop pot. This looks very pretty but not very stable.

If that doesn't scream sustainability, I don't know what would.
