the first name that came to mind was Autastic - combination of Autistic and fantastic and then perhaps a logo could be created in such a way that the two words could be merged so that the main name was prominent
Autastics is already taken by an Autistic group in San Francisco:

Since you are in Cambs, perhaps you are interested in Autscape 2012?
It will be in Suffolk, in July:

They may need help with their website.

It seems like there is an image that is commonly used with autism: multicolored puzzle pieces. Yet I'm rather fond of the neurodiversity images that incororate multiple colored / styled brains.

So, why not put the two together?
The puzzle pieces are usually used by curebies.
The Neurodiversity movement usually opposes the puzzle pieces:

The Neurodiversity movement tends to use the multi-colored infinity symbol:

I'm thinking to make the AutWorld title very large, crisp and bold (in white with a very solid black outline) In front of a cloud of multicolored brains that will form a border for the title. With the "celebrating neurodiversity blahstuff" byline floating underneath the cloud.
Great! Go for it!

I wonder why... :)

I like the puzzle pieces, but I may interpret them differently than others. Life before my diagnosis was a puzzle, and collected all these little pieces from my experience trying to to solve the mystery. When I found out about my AS, all the pieces came flying together. My life made sense for the first time.

The puzzle pieces aren't going anywhere. If they have a negative connotation, it is up to us to take the symbol from those who would misuse it and make it our own.

At this event, a bunch of puzzle pieces will come flying together in unity. What are bunch of puzzle pieces all put together? One solid, unified, and harmonious picture.

Bump!

If we are going for multi-colored, let's make sure it doesn't look like a gay pride event. I have no issues with gay pride, I just want to make sure people get what we are about.

ok, here is a quick sketch of the Brainstorm idea:

[edit: changed to better quality pic]

I just kind of whipped this together in a few hours with inks and brushes. The paper is lousy, bled the ink a lot, but I didn't want to waste the good Bristol board on a sketch.

I think the idea was to screenprint a large poster eventually? Wwhich in turn could be scanned and printed en masse, and a couple drawn logos to scan and use for marketing handouts and web stuff.

Wasn't sure what to write in any of the text regions, since we don't seem to have a consensus yet, just a lot of waffling back and forth right now.

I used the simplest thing I could think of that's been mentioned for the subtitle. "Keep it simple, stupid" is a golden rule for poster design.

Sorry the camera isn't real great.

The "autism community" is mainly professionals and parents.

We are the "Autistic community".

kenG, I was under the impression from Alex's original posts that a big part of the fest was bridging the gap between the Autistic Community and potential employers and regular old people. More of a "hey yalls, this is who we are" than a "this is for us who are like each other" thing. That would be "Autism" Community, then wouldn't it?

Right now I have four finished logos, but I lack the equipment to actually make them into jpegs or even get them up here, so I'll just explain them and see if anyone likes my ideas.

Logo A is a big brain with a neuron right smack in the middle, axon like words spell out autworld 2012. I did this with a pop art style.

Logo B is essentially the famous optical illusion where two people face each other but in the middle it looks like a vase. One person is colored with multicolored puzzle pieces and the other is checkered. Autworld goes in the middle.

Logo C is more commercial, a puzzle square arranged sort of like Steve jobs next logo.

Logo D is a simplified owl, done with Chinese calligraphy like brush strokes and ink. Autworld is done in a beijing Olympic font.

I had a blast brainstorming these ideas. Hope you like them, and if i do get the chance I will post them up here:)

Ps... And burnbridge? That logo of yours is wonderful!!
