I remember when I was in the 1st grade (in the early 1970s) I collected pencils I found lying abandoned in the hallways (and ones that I had brought from home). I had a lot of them in my private desk---not bothering anyone. One morning I found my pencils gone. I told the teacher and she said she took them from me because I didn't need them all. That wasn't right---and to this day I know it isn't right. That was my property---it was my collection. I maintained proper conduct and high grades---so therefore the pencil collection was not a hindrance to me. And if she thought she was correcting my "pencil behavior" somehow, she should see me now---I still collect them and have amassed a huge collection of them. This teacher's actions resulted in mistrust. If she had proper reason to take away my pencils she should have conferred with me first and allowed me the opportunity to remove my pencils from the school (to my home).

Yeah, pencils, mechanical pencils, and fountain pens. I love the feel as they go across the paper.

...artists?

No kidding. Pencils rule. Mechanical pencils are just pen wannabes ... unless you're talking one of these:

Clutch Pencil / Leadholder

My dad (an architect) always used to leave those laying around, and I just could not stop playing with the jaws. I'd look at one for hours, just opening and closing the jaws.

I love simple machines! Ack!

A feeling from my childhood: pencils taste like studying
I chew on them a lot, the smell of wet wood and graphite is associated with focusing on a task , in silence and peace.
I love pencils....
ETA: Am I the only one who did this? You all seem to hate pencils! The slight crunch of the teeth digging in the paint, over and over, the specks of paint on your tongue that you spit out...Noone used to do that??

Does this apply to mechanical pencils. I don't like using regular pencils, not too fond of mechanical pencils either I'd rather use my space pen or sonic screwdriver pen, they are uncommon and unconventional, like me and they represent my love of science and science fiction and if they're in my shirt pocket and visible they might serve as conversation starters the sonic screwdriver did at least

I did. I like pencils, you can erase them.
