Well, my family and I adopted a cat over a week ago, a female we named Charlotte (middle name Alanis), and she is really starting to warm up to us and is very sweet by nature. Now that she is up and about more often, I have decided to expose her to various music types and artists that I know of. So far I have tried Sarah McLachlan and Alanis Morissette (for whom she was named), although I can't tell whether she likes or dislikes either musician (I have been keeping the volume particularly low for her, as I know cats can hear much better than humans). I plan on playing some Tori Amos, Celine Dion, Sheryl Crow, and several other musicians (I may even throw Classical into the mix), but I wanted to get some other opinions on this: Is it a bad idea or not?

I think letting anyone or anything listen to Celine Dion is a bad idea.

My last cat absolutely preferred 'smooth' jazz (a music type that I DON'T prefer after about 10 minutes of it).

I would suggest letting her listen to Marc Gunn. He's a Irish/Celtic singing comedian who did two CDs about cats

I believe that cats should adapt to the musical taste of their owners.

I respect your opinion, but I will say this: I am mainly starting off by exposing her to what I know and like, so that is why she is one of the singers I'm hoping to play for my cat. My mom has several CDs of other musicians I like, so I'll probably be scanning through them as well.

I have about 40 flutes (a special interest of mine) which I practice daily. My cat has been raised ever since she was a kitten listening to them so she's not afraid of them, but she IS judgmental! When I play a dynamic song with good tone, especially on one of my wooden flutes, she'll rub on me and purr and roll on her back. But as soon as I fudge a part or hit something flat, she gets up and bites my ankle! The good news is that after practicing at home playing at church is a piece of cake, since I know the old ladies in the pews won't get up and bite me if I mess up.

Waterboarding is supposedly a cruel and inhumane torture method that can traumatize victims for years to come. So it's a toss up, really.

My cats are OK with all kinds of music as long as I don't sing.

My cats have always gone for classical or easy listening, mellow stuff... not quite my usual genres, but I sometimes put them on to relax after a stressful day.
