Did you chew on objects a lot when you were growing up, especially when you were concentrating? I did quite a bit but never on a pencil but rather things made or rubber like some small toys. I still do this now when I use my computer and I;m concentrating on something I have been reading.

If Freud met me he would probably say I was orally fixated. I am always doing something with my mouth:
Chewing things (all my pen lids are mangled lol)
Eating
Biting my nails
Talking to myself
Sucking things
Smoking
My mouth never stops going one way or another.
I also spend a lot of time rubbing my tickle (piece of silky material I carry around with me) so contrary to popular saying, keeping my hands busy does not stop me from shoving things in my mouth lol.
My brother was the real 'chewer' of our family. He actually ate most of his sweatshirt at school. I used to bite hard on a pen when I was nervous. This literally backfired on me during a SATS exam when the pen decided to snap and I looked like a Smurf.

I used to chew on my shirt so much there would be holes in all of the collars and sleeves. Now I still do it from time to time, but I sort of hold the material between my teeth rather than bite at it, usually I don't notice until somebody mentions it. I find that chewing on gum instead helps.
