Unless some has no avatar, I remember their avatar, not the user name. Remembering the user name comes later, after I've seen them a lot, I see them get quoted enough, or they change their avatar and I figure out they were that person. This makes it really annoying when two people have the same avatar, as I confuse them, or change their avatar, as then I don't immediately recognize them. Is this common among everyone, just aspies, or something else?

Yeah, I relate. If it makes it any easier just think of me as Colin Baker, 6th Doctor from Doctor Who.

I'm like this in a way as well. In general I see the avatar first before I see the name.

I feel bad for the people who identify other users by their avatars, because I am prone to changing mine a lot. I'm sorry if I've caused anyone too much confusion.

Speaking of confusion, I used to confuse your (Ganondox's) posts with mine when we were both using avatars of Twilight Sparkle. I used to look at your posts and think, "I don't remember typing that!" I guess it's a good thing that I decided to go back to using avatars of anime characters.

Yeah, I look at the user's avatar first, and in my head I'll say, "oh, this must be [insert username]' post". If there's no avatar, or I see an avatar I don't recognize, I'll take a glance at the username. Everytime a user changes their avatar, I have to commit their new avatar to memory (if they have one).

I also remember people by avatar primarily.

Same here. I'm very visual so I'm drawn towards their avatar first thing.

Speaking of which, I really should change mine soon. I've had this one on here for almost two years!

I just posted a thread about placing a real picture of yourself as an avatar...especially the people who are single and looking for dates.

I changed my avatar to a bigger version of the same picture. That's about as far as I'm willing to change, for now. :D

I was thinking of changing my avatar. But, I have a problem recognising names, except for those who post a lot and I've deliberately taken note of (that's no more than half a dozen). I know avatars and relate them to the users, mostly. I was concerned about changing mine in case any other users suddenly didn't recognise me anymore. Although I'm not sure that this would be at all detrimental anyway. It's not as if anyone talks to me like they know me on here, except for a couple of PMs.

I've changed my avatar and location twice - my first avatar was from a Eurythmics cover featuring Annie Lennox and a slightly modified line from "Sweet Dreams" as my location.

My second avatar was a picture of Anya from Buffy: The Vampire Slayer holding a sword. My custom title was "Strangely literal" and my location was "the other side of the river."

swbluto started a thread asking if Aspies were more likely to use pictures of fictional people as avatars and NTs more likely to use pictures of cute animals, so I changed my avatar to a fictional cat (Miss Kitty Fantastico from Buffy: The Vampire Slayer). Stuck with it because I love tuxedo kittens.

I do recognize people by avatars first, then reading their names. I have been confused by identities before because of either similar avatars or because someone changed their avatar.

I can relate. Somehow I don't usually pick fictional characters or animals as my avatar. I like to choose my younger self or someone I can relate to very much (like John Howard Davies as Oliver Twist for a while). My custom title also refers to him ("work'us brat" = workhouse brat, with which Noah Claypole "bullies" little Oliver until he attacks him and flees to London). Perhaps my narcissistic tendency and craving for being forever a child have something to do with it.

Oh, that's the reason why people seem to vanish and new people appear all the time?

By the way how do you edit custom rank? I tried going to it in the control panel and all I found was birthday and avatar.
