I considered myself to be a way above average writer.

It is frustrating that does not translate into being a good conversationalist.

It is in me to be good talking with others, but the words don't flow.

I believe that I am an excellent writer. You're right that talking is not the same thing. When I was in High School, my Senior English teacher, who was also the debate coach, drafted me for his novice squad, because I was such an excellent writer. He learned to regret that idea. When I am running off at the mouth, there is simply no telling what is going to come out. With writing, one has time to consider, proofread, weigh choices of words, notice illogic, rewrite. After it's once translated to sound, it's gone, on the record, unchangeable, whether you like it or not. I don't believe that I've gotten any better with time, though I've been bright enough not to get myself into formal debate again! :P

I've been told repeatedly that I am an excellent writer. I have made money at writing.

I also find this doesn't translate to conversation. The processes involved in each are quite different and only related in the sense that both use language to transmit ideas.

I've been told that I'm a very good writer, but I'm not really buying it.

Compared to a good novelist, no.

Compared to my wretched speaking and social skills, yes.

I am an excellent writer and a so-so speaker, and I am attempting to write a novel. People have high expectations for it, but I just have decent expectations for it.

Way better at writing than speaking. I use the trick of mentally writing what I'm going to say before I say it, when I really really need to communicate effectively. It makes me sound pedantic and downright nerdy, but that's way better than not getting the idea across at all.

I've always been told that I have a talent for writing, but I honestly wouldn't think that I was any better at it than the average person if people didn't keep telling me otherwise. My mom even encourages me to pursue a career as an author.

My speech is much less eloquent than my writing though. I stutter, I forget common words, I repeat myself over and over, among other things.

No, I cannot write at all. That said I still pass my exams way above average. It's disturbing to think that I can do that, though.
And I'm even worse at speaking.
I'm only good at maths and not being able to write down a decent sentence with it doesn't help (others, I'm just fine, my notes usually are stuffed with made up symbols and attemps in conversion to various formal systems).
However I can read anything at all to extract information if I can bear the linguistic anxiety that comes with it.

I've had some work published. Can't really say how good that makes me.

If you don't mind, how did you make money writing?

I prefer writing to verbal communication. I'd rather E-mail than talk. I've been a professional writer for years and have written hundreds of magazine articles, as well as numerous books. I also do workshops & lectures, but there I'm more talking at people, than with people, as I'm working from prepared notes.
