I am at my wit's end, the edge of having a breakdown. I am asking everywhere and anywhere for help with employment. Everyone either says, we don't help people with Aspergers, go away (NextStep, Prince's Trust), and/or tell me to contact the NAS.

I might as well as the RSPCA for support rather than fruitlessly trying NAS again.

There is nothing NAS running in my area, and I've never had social services funding needed for NAS, and I have applied and re-applied continuously since 2000 for social services funding.

It's like reality is a giant concentration camp for me having Aspergers. Whoever I ask, it's always NAS, NAS, NAS...

Exactly what trouble are you having with the NAS? They've always been very helpful when I've contacted them.

First of all, where do you live? Then people will be more able to help you with nearby services.

They aren't interested as I don't get social services funding. And certainly can't afford their services out-of-pocket.

There's a copy/similar organisation locally but they are EXACTLY the same. No social services funding, no cash? Go away then, they say. I've been contacting both for over a decade with NO help.

And YES, I have applied and reapplied for social services funding.

Also it's amazing how many of these organisations run a mile if you even mention having Aspergers.

Pure Innovtions got me a job, maybe you should contact them and see if they can help you?

I think they specialise in getting Autistic people into a job too.

Are they legit, or some kind of exploitative workfare farm like Remploy?

I had help from Mencap to find employment. They were quite good - when I applied for a job they wrote to the employer explaining what Aspergers is and how it affects people, and sent someone along to interviews with me and I also had a support worker come into work with me for the first couple of months. With their help I managed to get a job within a few weeks, whereas when I was receiving support from Prospects at the NAS I still hadn't found a job after 6 months.

What happened to your old username?

Oh, you're using a variety of usernames now - that's new. You're easy to spot.

Did they give you employment, or was it a coincidence that you got a job about the same time? Will they help people with Aspergers, or tell you to go away and contact those crooks at NAS instead?

They didn't give me employment, but they helped me find a job. They helped me search the internet and newspapers for suitable jobs, helped me with the application process and interview, and supported me during my first few months at work. I don't think I would have found a job that quickly without them. They certainly help people with Aspergers, at least in my area, I don't know about other parts of the country.

Ah, will be no help for me then. I'm a university graduate so don't have difficulty reading newspapers and so forth. Another dead end thought, great. :(

I'm a university graduate too, as are several of the aspies I know who have received support from Mencap. You do not need to have difficulty reading newspapers to get a place on one of their programmes. I would still recommend them as they seem to be more successful than most other organisations at getting aspies into work.

aye it's unfortunate that their funding has tied them to the jobcentre. it's actually close to an extension of workfare slavery, or at least was when i last checked. work for 12 weeks for free and you might get a job in sainsburys.

rather than trying to find direct assistance from organisations like nas, have you thought about looking round third sector organisations in your area with a view to volunteering? this can often lead to paid employment eventually, and at worst gives you some good experience for the cv and hopefully a good reference.
