So, I’m really looking forward to this movie (John Carter) and the first trailer (below) leads me to believe that it will be a faithful adaptation of the source material.

However, I am starting to get a bad feeling, like the one I had about Green Lantern…

The interwebs seem to be full of either indifference or hate for this movie.

Ironically, I’m seeing a lot of comments from people comparing the film to the likes of Avatar, Star Wars, Dune, etc and dismissing it as a derivative, ripoff movie.

For those who don’t know, John Carter is based on Edgar Rice Burroughs’ A Princess of Mars(click), a foundational science fiction/fantasy novel that’s been in print for nearly 100 years.

Although, I guess it really doesn’t matter, if the mob says you’re ripping off Avatar, you’re ripping off Avatar.

Anyway, the movie has great source material and creative talent behind it, and I think it might be a good film. However, I’m starting to doubt it will gain wide acceptance or do well at the box office…

Criticizing a movie for being deriviative of Avatar, which is a lazy rewrite of Dances with Wolves and FernGully. The mind boggles.

I do, however, take issue with this movie for being deriviative of Star Wars. Unlike Avatar, Star Wars isn't derivative of anything. Nothing at all, I tell you!

just a first impression from the trailer you posted, but this movie looks horribly lame. on the other hand, the original story and plot sounds quite interesting and may have been an exciting read as recently as six decades ago, but it's not then anymore. oh, and i personally feel anything released by disney will be horrendously dumbed down to ensure anyone over seven can enjoy, so in other words... pass.

Yeah, add a bit of Buck Rogers and Doc Smith's Lensmen (click) and Darth Vader's your uncle... I mean father.

By the way, Flash Gordon was a blatant ripoff of the John Carter/Barsoom series...

Well, that's certainly what all the "cool kids" are saying... Thanks for being so typical. :P

I must say, I'm not too happy with Disney's involvement myself. I'm sure they're one of the reasons Dejah Thoris is so clothed in the movie.

I heard someone call the movie Conan on Tatooine. That's actually a fairly apt description. ERB's Mars is a dying world where an advanced global culture has collapsed into a sea of barbarism with only islands of civilization as the oceans and atmosphere boil off into space.

I think it has a great mix of scifi and fantasy elements, but that will probably hurt the film. If Cowboys and Aliens (a good movie, by the way) demonstrated anything, it was that people don't like having their genres mixed...

Still, Andrew Stanton made some great movies at Pixar, so I have little doubt this will be a great story and not just CGI porn, but that might not be enough to make anyone go see it... :?
