What is the chance of the baby being on the spectrum? Because my biological "father" was probably an aspie, (and a jerk) and I turned out having Asperger's...

And my moms fiance/my soon to be adoptive father is probably on the spectrum. So how should I prepare and what is the chance?

Like anybody really knows??

I've read estimates around 80%. However 2 of my 3 kids appear to be NT. So-- search me.

Like it matters. Aspies are about as alike as cats.

Nobody knows yet. There just hasn't been enough research on what happens when AS people have babies.

With a 70-90% concordance in identical twins, we do know autism is highly genetic, and that implies that there should be some increased risk.

IMO, that means little more than "let's make sure to watch this child's development", for now. Autism isn't an emergency.

And if it makes you feel any better about it, my half-sister's dad is a willfully-ignorant jerk, and she's a very level-headed, intelligent, considerate teenager. I don't think you can inherit "jerk". :)

Callista, I know it isn't an emergency, I am for neurodiverity and ARM, I just know that raising a child with any ASD is going to be different than an NT child.

LOL, I know you can't inherit 'jerk' :D

How to prepare for the arrival of your new (potentially) ASD sibling:

1) Take every item in your home weighing less than 50 lbs, and glue them together.

2) Hang a large garland of dried marigolds over a framed picture of Abraham Lincoln in your bedroom.

3) Paint the kitchen 'Caribbean Oasis' blue.

4) Make sure your bathroom has a shower curtain with hummingbirds on it.

5) Avoid eating Pop Rocks.

6) Read the Complete Works of Shakespeare while spinning in circles. Don't vomit.

Hey, it gave me a good laugh. Just picturing a concerned family acting silly like that is an amusing mental picture.

Also, you simply must buy a pet mouse and name it Sir Isaac Newton. No other name will do, or Calamity Shall Occur!

I have AS and all four of my kids are NT. Lots of NT people have kids with AS or ASD. I guess it's all a roll of the dice. No way to tell for sure either way until the kid gets here and starts growing.

I have AS, and my daughter is NT. She was the one who figured out that I'm AS, the one who knows me best in the world, so I guess mine doesn't show very much.

I wonder how much of that jerkiness is actually from AS symptoms and I wonder how many people would say the same about your behaviour.

Just saying.

What happens if your kid looks up "Sir Isaac Newton" & one day you walked in with your child asking him how does it feel been "reincarnated as a pet mouse" & starts asking questions on Physics, mathematics, astronomy etc.

:)

( You forgot )

He pretty much abandoned me and told everyone he wasn't my father. Had nothing to do with AS.
