Hello,
I'm new here, well, actually I've been here before and learned a lot from the message boards, but this is my first post. My husband of 28 years has AS, or so I've been told by 3 specialist counsellors, however he won't hear of it and I'm not allowed to mention the 'A' word.

I accept that's how it is for him. It's hard for me to stay in the marriage, we can't sort out any differences and I'm tired of just agreeing with him all the time to keep the peace so I currently have one foot out the door. I'm finding it hard to leave.

Enter Buteyko! My husband went to 5 workshops in the Buteyko breathing technique and has been raving about it ever since (2 weeks). It has cured 20 of his symptoms from sleep apnoea, anxiety, social confusion, wrinkles, alopecia, a sore shoulder, visual disturbances and so on. He says that for the first time in his life (he's 59) he is not struggling. This is nothing short of amazing and he is enthusiastic and confident. He has 'opened up' to me yesterday, being honest and exposing his vulnerability, sober, which is a first for him. He has done this twice, drunk, in 28 years.

I'm wondering if anyone else on this forum has heard of, or had, similar experiences with breathwork/Buteyko to help them in any way?

Thanks!

Thanks for the info about this Buteyko breathing treatment. I will look into it. I am thinking that the increased oxygen intake may stimulate the brain, and enhance the brain function. It is not a cure, but the added oxygen may certainly be a help in brain functioning. Also, it may help stimulate the healing of physical injuries, as well. Because oxygen is mood boosting, it can be helping with the anxiety and social confusion, too. In other words, this breathing therapy is not a placebo. It is possible for this to provide some real help on a limited basis. But any help at all is good, so I hope your husband keeps with this program.

A few years back I read a book by someone else about breathing exercises, and their benefits. I think I may still have the book somewhere. Unfortunately, I'm as bad at keeping to those kinds of exercises, as I am about keeping to other exercise regimens. I do think this is worth pursuing though.

If I was in this situation I would just act like I think the breathing thing is BS and not let him bring up the 'b' word without getting 'annoyed'...you know feed him a bit of his treatment back to him. If he can't at least attempt to understand there are other people in the world besides him.....but its really up to you what you want to do with your relationship, so that's all I'll say about that.

As for breathing exercises I know that can sometimes help with anxiety as you can more or less calm down a bit when you can control your breathing and slow it down.

Thanks for welcoming me and for your replies. Unfortunately I'm going to have to delete my original post as it shows up in a google search and it would not help my cause if my husband found it.

All the best

Haha - 9999 minutes, that's great, I had to get out the calculator. Oh well, I'll take my chances. And go visit my sister in law in Connecticut for a well earned break
