I'll throw my two cents in later but I'm curious on what other people will say here first.

I'm thinking mostly along the line of 8 bit but SNES or N64 would be fine as well.

Yes, but i would also play them too. I have a NES console but no games currently. I also have an app on my windows phone with many of the Super Mario games' (NES/SNES/N64) music on it. I have the title screen music from Super Mario Kart as my ringtone.

Lol, sorry, I see where my OP was a bit ambiguous. The question is 'Which games in this group would you rate highly?'.

Since I've got a fairly long list I'll refrain from Youtube links.

Mine would be:

1) Shadowgate (NES)
2) Zelda - Ocarina of Time (N64)
3) Metroid (NES)
4) Dragon Warrior I (NES)
5) Faxanadu (NES)
6) Master Blaster (NES)
7) Ghouls & Ghosts (original of originals, NES)
8 ) Batman (NES)
9) Castlevania II (NES)

They're all good though admittedly I think original Shadowgate is about 150% for me.

What's funny as well is just how much of this you hear in other music as well. Anyone who claims it doesn't influence is still listening to golden age radio.

To give a few others honorable mention as I think of them:
Bionic Commando
Ninja Gaiden
Rygar

If I can think of more I'll add.

Prettymuch anything by Capcom. Seriously.

Ah, yeah, all of those games had pretty swell music (Deja Vu and Uninvited). Maniac Mansion was another adventure game that wasn't that great on the NES, but made up for it with awesome music.

Not sure exactly what you mean.

The "Mega Man" and "Mega Man X" series have very catchy music.

Magician and Mega Man 1-3.

I'd have mentioned Shadowgate, Deja Vu and Uninvited, but two people beat me to them. :P

By far it has to be Mario Paint. You could even make your own music in the game. I have so much time spent making music and swatting flies in this game :D... The good old days of childhood. I will probably buy this on Ebay soon, just in case I ever get a kid... Surely, he or she will love it even if it takes me 30 years to find a good woman to pop one out!

I nominate Desert Commander as a game worth buying for the in-game music:

This is theme 2 from the game.

NES titles just for the music...hmm!
Okay, how about these:

*Metal Gear 2: Snake's Revenge
*The Legend of Zelda
*Super Mario Bros. 3
*Rockman 1-3 (Megaman)
*Final Fantasy (first one)
