I liked that movie. Surprise is, who the villain was looking for really is.

I'm Still Here

A mockumentary about actor Joaquin Phoenix's transition from acting to a career being the next...hip-hop sensation?!

(Wait...what?! :? )

A hilarious film that explores the concept of celebrity and does for hip-hop what
This Is Spinal Tap did for heavy metal.

Being John Malkovich.

Truly bizarre fictional movie about a real life person, actor John Malkovich.

The Proposition

A Western set in the Australian Outback about an outlaw named Charlie Burns (played by Guy Pearce) who is offered a deal by law enforcement. To have all charges dropped against him, he must find a psychopathic member of his gang within one week and kill him.

A film that is worth a watch but is very brutal, very violent, very bloody film with vibes similar to the Westerns directed by Sergio Leone and Sam Peckinpah.

(And I am NOT even a fan of Westerns!)

The closest thing to a truly obscure movie I've seen recently is Blonde Ice, a low-budget 1948 noir film about a psychopathic femme fatale played by Leslie Brookes. It's not completely forgotten, though, since it was released on DVD multiple times.

For those of you who do watch a lot of movies, I have been searching for the name of a movie I saw years ago: The setting is a station (ranch) in Australia. The characters are a man with chronic depression who feels terrible every day, his wife who gardens naked and tries to keep the family together, the tax man who shows up to collect back taxes they can't pay and ends up staying on never completing his job, and a daughter who pulls a quite surprising stunt. In the last scene, there is a ship in front of the family house in the outback and the man's depression evaporates.

Does anyone recognize this film?

This sounds much like the 2003 independent film Off the Map, starring Joan Allen and Sam Elliott. However, I think it is set in New Mexico (where it was filmed) rather than Australia (where it was released). Otherwise the story of the IRS agent looking for them doesn't make much sense.

The Whole Wide World.

Story of the last years of Robert E. Howard, the father of Heroic fantasy fiction, through the eyes of the young school teacher he had been seeing, prior to his suicide. The movie deals with Howard's struggle with depression as he is regarded as little more than an oddball and eccentric in his small Texas town.

Border, a 2018 Swedish crime/drama/fantasy film. "Weird" and "different" are two words that come to mind when watching it which, by default, makes it my kind of flick.

Pi. I'm not sure if this is an obscure film. Maybe a cult favorite, though. People describe it as the bastard child of Eraserhead and Tetsuo: The Iron Man. In a sense, that's about right, although Tetsuo is so highly kinetic it's like watching a movie on fast forward.

The Machinist

A brilliant thriller starring Christian Bale (who lost about 60 LBS to prepare himself) as a paranoid factory worker who begins having hallucinations and receiving cryptic notes.

Very Kafkaesque and worth a watch.

The Lighthouse.

Though brand spanking new, I can tell this black-and-white film is going to remain obscure. Taking place in the late 19th century, a new assistant is left on an island which he is to work under a deranged lighthouse keeper who says his last assistant had lost his mind. With lonely days, and secrets kept by both men that eat away at them, the line between reality and what is fantasy becomes blurred, turning sexual frustrations into dreams of intercourse with inhuman denizens of the sea... or is it just dreams? Slow, but very creepy horror film by the maker of The Witch.

Does Body Melt count? I never see people mention it or hear them talk about it. Granted, that could just be because it's not a very good movie  I just watch it because I'm a sucker for some good body horror, which it does have. (And it has surprisingly little actual melting - only one out of the nine afflicted people actually melts in any way. Which isn't to say the rest of the movie isn't plenty gory, gooey, and gross - it is.)
