The two I can think of are Plague Dogs and Up the Academy.

Plague Dogs is a British animated movie from 1982 based on a book by Richard Adams, the author of the better known Watership Down. This has to be one of the most grim movies I have ever seen, yet there is a haunting beauty to it as well. It sucked me in really fast, the story is engrossing.

Up the Academy was Mad Magazine's 1980 attempt to cash in on the success of National Lampoon's Animal House. It was a flop, some considered it offensive and Mad Magazine wanted all of their connections to the film to be hidden and they have never made another live action film since. I kind of wish they did because this movie is freaking hysterical. Oh yeah, and Ralph Macchio is in it pre-Karate Kid.

Oh what the heck, I'll post the first part of each of them and you can hunt the rest of it down on youtube it they interest you.

Namueopneun San (Treeless Mountain). Habla Con Ella (Talk to Her). Tillsammans (Together).

I think they're all pretty good films, Namueopneun San made me cry loads (which is very rare for me, I've only cried at two other films in my life and I've seen 1000+ films). Tillsammans was directed by my favourite Director, Lukas Moodysson. Habla Con Ella is my least favourite of the three, I only watched it because I have to do a close study essay on it for my Film exam in June.

If anybody says Donnie Darko I suggest they get banned lol.

That movie is not obscure anymore as pretty much everyone knows about it now.

I am speaking from the future, and I must say I am not familiar with "Donnie Darko."

But back in 2012, I would say The Hearts of Age, a 1934 film by William Vance and Orson Welles was a fairly obscure film I watched.

For a sense of Orson's timeline of early achievements, he did the War of the Worlds radio broadcast in 1938, and Citizen Kane in 1941.

appendum

I looked up Donnie Darko. Interesting. However, I can find it on Netflix, so I agree it cannot be that obscure. <insert winky face here>

I recently watched Morgina, a 1972 Czech gothic horror/thriller. I wouldn't say it's particularly obscure, though.

Is "Withnail and I" obscure - also "Performance"?

"Vampyr" is definitely obscure.

"Even Dwarves Started Small"

Performance was shown quite frequently on TV in the 1970s and 1980s, but it's rarely seen these days. Maybe it's just unfashionable?

The only one I can recall at the moment is Calvary. Anyone who enjoyed The Guard will like this. It even stars Brendon Gleason, and I believe has the same writers and director.

An excellent biopic with great performances all around! James Franco was brilliant as Tommy Wiseau (the man who wrote and directed The Room; the cult movie now considered one of the worst movies of all time) as was his brother Dave Franco as Greg Sestero, the actor who wrote the memoir that The Disaster Artist was based off.
