Quote:
In comments confirming the open-source community's suspicions, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer Thursday declared his belief that the Linux operating system infringes on Microsoft's intellectual property.

In a question-and-answer session after his keynote speech at the Professional Association for SQL Server (PASS) conference in Seattle, Ballmer said Microsoft was motivated to sign a deal with SUSE Linux distributor Novell earlier this month because Linux "uses our intellectual property" and Microsoft wanted to "get the appropriate economic return for our shareholders from our innovation."

 How I wish the DoJ had pursued the Anti-trust case against M$ to a satisfactory conclusion.

Sounds like another SCO case, only MS does not have the guts to go after IBM and instead is going to go after a small, hapless company that does not have the means to defend itself against such a behemouth

Hard to figure out what components exactly they're talking about.

Edit: Looks like Ballmer doesn't know either.

That is the biggest problem. All these people say that Linux is violating their IP but when asked where, they cannot say. Considering that the source code is available for anyone to look at, I would think that if indeed, someones IP was stolen, it would have been found by now.

This is funny: "the Linux operating system".
Firstly, Linux isn't an operating system, Linux is a kernel. Ubuntu for example: It uses the Linux kernel and a load of software (alot of GNU) to make up an OS.
Secondly, it's open source, who do they sue?

I honestly have no idea what Ballmer is talking about, in regards to his belief that Linux has been infringing on Microsoft's IP. After SUSE signs this deal, perhaps Linux will indeed incorporate so many MS technologies that it will truly have more than its fair share of MS IP insode. SUSE and others in the Linux world should be careful signing agreements with MS, given MS's history in taking advantage of agreements it signs. Remember Microsoft Java? Well, think of Microsoft Linux.

(I am going to get flamed for this)

I think linux offers more choice!! ! But it isn't that great for New users
My experience with linux has been variable. Depending on the distro
Puppy linux: Very small and neat on the other hand Buggy as hell!

Ubuntu: Rock stable on the other hand the absence of third party codecs such as mp3
Which i can understand because of licensing issues

Mandrake 10.1 Very buggy if you use KDE
using linux based apps X windows what ever feels incomplete to me

in conclusion I don't think linux is ready for the consumer market just yet
But I tell you what it is certainly on it's way!! !

Till then i'll use XP

Why would you get flamed for that?

Dear Steve Ballmer... Microsoft owes Xerox. Deal with it.

Before SCO there was Corel. I bought a Corel Linux factory installed system in 2001.
Then in 2002 Microsoft did an investment in Corel to get them out of the un*x bussiness. They have a war chest of patents no question M$ could crush Linux if
it was not for the equalily massive war chest of patents IBM has. So untill you here
about a M$ & IBM deal these investments are just to get the companies to di-vest in
the un*x bussiness.

No you aren't :P It's as close to a consensus as possible on the internet (aka "The Tubes") That Microsoft is the devil.
