Here are the salaries for geologists based on experience--all assume that the person has a bachelor's degree. Salaries are higher if the person has a master's degree or PhD.

Salaries in Houston:

0-2 yrs exp: $42,730
2-4 yrs: $50,303
4-6 yrs: $62,094
6-8 yrs: $74,768
8-10 yrs: $98,252

Salaries in Boise:

0-2 yrs: $39,544
2-4 yrs: $46,553
4-6 yrs: $57,465
6-8 yrs: $69,194
8-10 yrs: $90,928

Well, that is no surprise. I think that geologists are being hired by the oil industry and working with oil tends to pay very well.

My dad has been an oifield Geologist in North Dakota since graduating from UND's Geology program with an MA in 1979. Due to low oil prices in the 80's and 90's he experienced long bouts of little to no employment in his profession.

Your experience may differ, however, I would also want to look for other professions where you can utilise a Geology degree.

To me, that doesn't seem to pay very much. My mom originally wanted to be a geologist but decided the pay wasn't high enough.

Some of the big oil companies are offering starting salaries of $75,000 a year.

That's not bad income at all. Where I live in the US, we have alot of natural gass, which has made a big boom in the area. Another idea, have you looked at what the US government income is for geologists. I know that if you work for the US government, they will help with student loans. Each department has its own policy but they are willing to help with some of the loan.
