How unlikeable are the characters in Magnolia?

I haven't seen the film, but from what I know and what I've read, I get the vibe that they would be right out of a Bret Easton Ellis book: stupid, sociopathic, cokeheaded scumbuckets who casually mistreat everyone for no reason and casually go both ways, if you know what I mean. Is this an accurate assumption?
