I'm not sure about the archetypical American liberal, but this Canadian social democrat wants the government larger in terms of social welfare and smaller in terms of corporate welfare.

How about exclusively engaged in keeping the peace, protecting the borders and punishing crime?

There are only three areas in which government should operate:

The police
The courts
The military.

No welfare. Period.
