I have not read the book (and I do not intend to because there are many other things I would rather read), but I thought the following article was interesting.

"EXPLAINING 'FIFTY SHADES'. How Bondage Solves the Problem of Modern Love"
"Since its release last year, the erotic novel "Fifty Shades of Grey" has
become a global best-seller. Its success has spawned a debate over
whether sadomasochism is demeaning or liberating for women. In an essay
for SPIEGEL ONLINE, award-winning sociologist Eva Illouz argues that the
book describes an antidote to modern relationships."

If BDSM is consensual then go for it.

I am just all for consensual practices and anti real life non consensual practices.

It's not well written, and the characterisation is odd, it's racist and slightly homophobic in parts. It's also a slightly offensive portrayal of abuse survivors (abuse makes you a sadomasochist, didn't you know?). But, if you like slightly mindless porn, sure, it's 'good'.

I heard the opposite claim from people into BDSM - they don't want people to think their sexual preference is due to abuse and needs to be 'cured'.

However, I think that if there are people who see a link between the two in their own lives, it doesn't need to be written off completely.

About the book - I heard it's bad, but it's not very objective to go by word of mouth.

I've now found the original Twilight fanfiction - it's not shockingly bad, it's just really boring to me, so I won't keep reading it. Chrissakes, too many fics are boring, IMO.
