"Public places" belong to the taxpayers. They are not just there to deface.

There's no question the artistic ones are great.

On the tags and gangs issues, I think they are harmless. Gangs can do a lot worse than putting paint on the wall.

If its done well, and carries some cultural, relevant, artistic or intellectual point. I'd sooner look at a well painted mural than a drab grey or brick work wall.

Here in Northern Ireland though, we have the sinister face of paramilitary murals and kerbstone painting. Some of it can be socially contentious, and quite intimidating.
