The key to the disorder likely lies not in one region but in the way the brain is wired.

Isn't it ironic that we're the ones who came up with this first, then they wouldn't believe us, and then it turns out that it's scientifically the case?

It isn't a disease. It's more likely, given the results of their own research, that it's just a gene hiccup.

The ultimate goal of all the research is to find not just a cause but a cure.

Just make sure you don't force it into everyone on the Spectrum, then you're being overpowering.

A neat article, but with a few odd bits here and there, as shown by my quotes. The only one that can be disproved is the disease one, if they can prove it is caused by a virus.

KBABZ -

I agree with you. I don't necessarily feel like I want to be "cured". At the risk of becoming a pariah, though, I don't think that a cure is a bad idea for people who can't take care of themselves because they are so debilitated by autism. Still I think that they over-generalized the term "a disease so disabling" when they applied it to everyone on the spectrum.

I thought that the notion that there are various "autisms" was interesting. We've been saying that all along as well. NT's want a one-size-fits-all diagnosis, and ASD's just don't work that way.

*Janicka turns to Dr. NT and says* "Good work grasshopper!"

Yeah, I'd agree with you as well, what with the 'we want to cure everyone, everyone, everyone' idea. I've made a character in my story who's on the Spectrum, but because she's on a futuristic planet (and as a result, also not a human), there actually is a cure introduced in one point in the story, and this character has to choose whether or not she wants to take it.

With the "We've thought that all along, why the #%$@ didn't you listen to us!?!?" thought, it gets really annoying about how they never seem to listen until they find out for themselves, and even then they ignore us. Makes me want to whack them over the head with my Starbuline (it's a sword I made up, named it after a certain user here :D).

on the cure thing....I don't want to be cured. I dig me, right or wrong.

had I been asked that 15 years ago...who knows.

I support a "cure" to be available to those who desire it.

if one of my sons ( 5 and 6) todl me they wanted to be "cured"...I would do whatever I could to support that.

I dont' think everyone should be fixed...but I feel that everyone should have a choice.

I don't wish to be cured. If I was cured, than I wouldn't be myself, anymore. I'm not diseased, I'm disordered.

I agree with you although I just call myself weird instead of disordered.

Frankly it'd be nice if it was a 'disease'.

Then other people could catch it and relate.

The real disease here seems to be intolerance. And that IS contagious.

Yeah, maybe a few less overgeneralizations would be nice.

I'm just hoping that, if they do develop a cure, there will be some reason applied to who is "cured." Obviously, you'd want to apply this cure as early as possible to allow for proper development, but how early can you tell exactly how afflicted a child is? And who makes that decision?

If you had told me pretty much any time before I was a teenager that you could fix what was "wrong" with me, I'd have jumped at it. But looking back, my only wish would be for a greater understanding on my part of what the deal was. I knew I wasn't normal-- the whole "Wrong Planet" bit-- but I didn't even understand what was different about me from other people.

So it's a terrible mystery huh? Well not much in there isn't what I haven't heard already about people's opinions on autism and searches for a cure(I don't believe it should be of course), but one thing I found interesting was they listed minocycline as a treatment for it. I'm very allergic to that drug. :?

I don't need a cure.

I may have AS, but I think it's more or less going away.

Going away? :?:

I dont think anyones personality needs to be cured - thats not a disease.. A growth on your arm or your lungs not working correctly, those are diseases, but the way you are, thats not a disease.

I believe at most, most issues are at the mental level, obviously, by "cured" by proper training..
