Have you ever heard of anyone thinking that the word "autism" is just a fancy way of saying that someone is ret*d? I have.

I used to think that, even though I was diagnosed no one ever bothered to tell me what it means. It took me almost 10 years before I found out.

I am consistently warned not to tell people I am an Aspie because "I do not want them to associate me with 'The others'."

A friend of a friend found out my son is showing advanced intelligence for his age and said "well doesn't that mean he doesn't have Autism?". Luckily my friend set him straight, but it's upsetting.

Not ret*d. I haven't told anyone. But I know of the possibility that people can associate me to someone who is far more visible in the community than I am. Which made it initially hard for me to relate to the spectrum at first. But it's nothing wrong with autistics, you know that. It's just a paradox. It's in many ways not the same thing at all. But you learn, others dont, and I don't mind it so much anymore.
