Dad rebelled against his hypereligous Kansas upbringing as the son of a minister (his mom was worse than his dad). Mom went along with her nonreligous upbringing. So niether was religous.
When I was ten they were both struggling about it apparently.
I was home from school reading a magazine or something, but was conversing with mom about the one religion she was prejudiced against:Mormons.
"What so bad about Mormons?"I asked.
She said "I dunno, it just makes me angry. A religion founded by a guy who claimed he talked to angels!"
I just shrugged and replied "isnt that how every religion got started?"
She was silent.
I looked up and she had stunned faraway look in her eyes. She finnally said "you know, I guess thats right."
That evening I heard them talking behind closed doors about something or other-but i heard my mom say the phrase "it raises the question isnt that what ALL religion is".
The upshot was that apparently, my dumb innocent comment as a child was the final straw that got both of my parents off religion.
