I'm a big anime fan, and Duvet by BoA is a song that I like to listen to when I'm feeling down, it's melancholy but somehow calming.

For those who are unfamiliar, it's the song used in the opening for the anime Serial Experiments Lain, which is about a girl who goes from receiving her first ever computer to becoming a superhacker and eventually achieving the singularity and becoming a goddess of the Internet. It's really interesting.

If you listen to the lyrics to either Duvet or Duvet Cyberia Remix (a soft electronica remix that I prefer more over the original), it doesn't sound like it has anything to do with the premise of Lain, but that's how I first heard of it. I listen to it a lot when dealing with loss (either death of a friend or breaking up with a love interest, etc.) Even though the song is melancholic and sad, it has a carthatic effect on my own sadness, and after about 2-3 loops of it I usually feel better. Not necessarily happy, but at least at peace.

Here's another one I thought of, Kimi no Kioku (Memories of You), the Persona 3 end credits theme. It's actually more of a "tears of joy" kind of song, an odd combination that makes it the kind of song to listen to when you've finally found your inner peace.

The Irish, of course, have a knack...

As for the 80s, it depends what sort of crying you mean. A lot of 80s music makes me want to cry! ;) But for songs I actually like...

I can't remember if this was still the 80s... and it's really just a thinly disguised plea for sex, but the music is sweet.

But here's the ones I really feel are fitting, songs I take sparingly:

Oh, that reminded me of another good 80s one... one of the best 80s mopey songs ever. On a side note... someone should have told the big-headed people to take it easy on the 80s hair fads...

Oh, and this one was pretty good, can't remember if it's here already. I think it was another of her songs that was posted:

And I also dunno if this one's up yet. She just about got herself hurt with her politics, but she certainly can sing, and was awfully pretty here...

Yeah, I did a lot of crying in the 80s. I'll probably think of more later.

Edit: AND I just did... I can't believe I didn't think of this first. Person who wanted 80s crying music, I give you... The Smiths.

This is a very beautiful and sad aria from Verdi's "Don Carlo"

Shattered by "Save The Day"

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rlsyqaAjLq0

Crawling, all alone along the floor,
Woke up this morning,
with a trail of teeth under the door,
I took a wrench to my chest, cracked all my ribs,
let the blood run all over my hands

I can't stand my own face anymore,
The mirror is on the floor,
Shattered a million eyes all crying please,
Please don't forget about me

You say I'm gonna break up,
Drive my car into a wall,
No they're never gonna wake up,
And wonder why they didn't care
After I pull out my tongue,
Tie it round my neck,
Hang myself alone in the dark

I can't stand my own face anymore,
The mirror is on the floor,
Shattered a million eyes all crying please,
Please don't forget about me
(Pull out my tongue tie it round my neck)
Please don't forget about me
(Hang myself alone in the dark)
(Pull out my tongue tie it round my neck)
Please don't forget about me
(Hang myself alone in the dark)

I can't stand my own face anymore,
The mirror is on the floor,
Shattered a million eyes all crying please,
Please don't forget about me

"Ronan" by Taylor Swift gets to me. Read the background story on Wikipedia, it's touching and heartbreaking. I had an uncle who died of cancer last year and a sister who died when I was four from cerebral palsy complications. The line "you were my best four years" hits me hardst, as does the breakdown.
