We all got to cry sometime. So I thought about, what songs do you love to cry to?

Rarely, if ever, with songs for the words; often for the music, harmonies and mood created and not always with sadness or longing: some music just overflows with bright golden light and joy (but what follows isn't that type).

For no obvious reason I think of two traditional Catalan folk songs: El canto de los pájaros (The Song of the Birds) and Cançó del lladre (The Thief's Song).

El canto de los pájaros is possibly better known as a cello solo played by Pablo Casals, one of the greatest cellists of all time, who was born in Catalonia.
This is a famous recording from 1961, made in The White House and while he was exiled from Catalonia by Franco's regime, which he fiercely opposed.

Simple Man by Lynerd Skynerd. It reminds me of my oldest son who hasn't talked to me in over two years because I yelled at his baby mama. He is easily swayed and she hates me because my son and I were close. She hates my oldest daughter because they were close too. She actually turned him against me. Made things up, threatened to take the baby and leave if he talked to me, etc. Over time he started believing her crap. She's left him but he still won't talk to me yet.

He used to play this song all the time on the guitar. It's always reminded me of him since then. I cry every time I hear it.

Cornflake!

Parles català? :o I sing a lot of these old songs, despite I don't have a great voice... "La Cançó del Lladre" is so sad and melancholic, and "El Cant dels Ocells" is very intense. How beautiful you posted them!

Wow fantastic, and thank you so much - someone actually understands why I posted them! :D

Alas no, I don't speak Catalan but I do know someone who was born there and it was he who helped me understand the deep love someone can have for their country, which makes these intensely beautiful songs all the more moving.
I am so glad you're able to sing them because it helps keep the tradition alive, and I'm sure very few have a voice as amazing as Montserrat Figueras - sadly, now silenced by death.

Such a shame the first was made unavailable due to copyright problems - but I've found another copy of it which apparently hasn't yet been noticed by whoever complained to YouTube, and an instrumental version.

Montserrat Figueras had a very special voice, very enchanting and kind of "ancient" and evocative. And the sound of the works of Savall are very interesting because he records in cathedrals sometimes. You can hear an echo that surrounds you. The version from Mare Nostrum is great too! I never heard this one :-D. I first heard of Savall with his version of "Llibre Vermell de Montserrat", have you listen to it?

I LOVE the version of the song "La Mariagneta" from Savall. It's just how the song sounded centuries ago, for sure! Beautiful.

This song has lyrics. I don't know if Montserrat Figueras sang it. You can listen to the original lyrics in catalan but with a fantastic translation in English, sang by Victoria de los Ángeles :-D

Another one very sad is "El Testament d'Amèlia" sung here by Victoria de los Ángeles, about a young woman that is dying on her bed and tells to her mother what to do with her belongings when she dies. In fact, her mother is poisoning her because she is the lover of the husband of Amelia so she wants her daughter to die, but Victoria de los Ángeles sing a waaay nicer and shorter version, ha ha. Amelia always produced me a lot of pity :?
