Akkadian is on my list, too! I would love to read "Gilgamesh" in the original!

I can read Spanish, and understand when someone else is speaking it, though my spoken spanish is pretty poor.

Mijn moedertaal is Nederlands, and the only other language I speak reasonably well is English.

I'm embarrassed about my French and German, especially my German even though it's better than my French; I grew up with German television, so understanding German is not a problem for me, even though I may miss a couple of words. Speaking it, however, is something I've had very little practice with. I can make myself understandable in German, but I have a silly accent and I haven't completely grasped the grammar even though it's a very logical language, with few irregularities.

Saya juga bisa berbicara sedikit bahasa Indonesia, tapi hanya sedikit saja. Tatabahasa saya kurang bagus, tapi sama dengan bahasa Jerman, orang lain bisa mengerti saya jika saya mencoba sebaik mungkin.
Jika saya dengar orang Indonesia berbicara dengan terlalu cepat, saya tidak bisa mengerti. Buat saya, bahasa Indonesia masih lebih sulit daripada bahasa Jerman untuk mengikut percakapan-percakapan.

(There's probably a million errors in there, but oh well. )

I picked up most of my French from opera. When I was 11, I learned Carmen and Les Contes d'Hoffmann in their entireties. I'm not musical, just good at memorizing stuff and extrapolating from examples. I can still sing the "Seguedilla".

I'm an Italian native speaker. Then, I can speak English and Spanish(thanks to my mother). I can also speek Ancient Greek and Latin, I study them at school, but they don't count, they aren't used anymore, lol. I had to learn French this summer, but it was too hard for me, so I gave up.

I would like to learn Ancient Mayan.

  You suceded (but an image of a tiny orange popped into mind). I mostly know things related to my interests and making sure the people at Chinese restaurants do not give me rice or mushrooms. I am terrible at transliterating it however, since I like to use a phonetic system based on German, Swedish and Icelandic (it's the most accurate pronunciation system yet, but people don't like it since they cannot recognize it).
The German used in the media is odd in that they speak very slowly/clearly and with a certain tone and inflection you will not find on the streets. I can only imagine it is to help non-native speakers comprehend it better. You don't see that in the U.S.
I also always have a chuckle when someone says they do not speak or speak little of a language in the language they don't know. I was speaking German to a student who was preparing to take it in college. After about a minute, he looks at me and says "ich spreche wenig deutsch" in a twisted and mangled corruption of the language. "ich" isn't pronounced as "ick" unless you're a Saxon. Even "eech," as the Bavarians say it, is preferable to "ick." <<end semi-rant>>
