As a kid I was very tidy, always putting back toys in their place keeping my room clean and all. But back in my teenage years I grew messy and I now need help to range my things; my desk, my table, my bedroom, etc... always being messy place. Am I the only one? What may be the cause of it? I wish I was rather being the opposite. (Messy as a kid and tidy as a adult.)

I call it an organized mess, on the surface my room looks like a complete mess yet I know where everything is so I dont want to change that and the fact that it has been a mess for so long that I dont really want change that.

I used to be very tidy like you, always cleaning up my personal space, but since my late teens or early twenties I've grown increasingly unconcerned with tidying up my place, so there's always stuff and garbage lying around.

It's not so much that I have trouble with it, as it is that I just don't care anymore. Many people think it goes against my character, though. Outwardly, in public, when I go out of my house, I'm still know for being neat and tidy, so it comes as a surprise to people when I tell them that my home is a mess.

I've experienced the same thing, and what I think the cause is (for me, anyway) is that I just don't feel like I have the time to keep it organized anymore. As a kid, since I wasn't hanging out with friends after school or anything like that, I had more time than I knew what to do with. Now, I'm always busy and never feel like I have enough time for anything - including keeping my room tidy.

My motto is "A place for everything and everything in its place". The problem is that I rarely have a place for everything. And anything that does not have a place ends up as clutter.

At one job 20 years ago, I probably had the tidiest office in the entire company. I didn't have much in it and so I did have a place for everything and was able to keep everything in its place.

My current office is roughly 20 feet by 15 feet and has four desks, ten computers, seven bookshelves, and hundreds of books and manuals as well as other gear. I probably have about fifty percent more things than I have places to put them and so it stays very cluttered.

My life oscillates between the two. Mostly, it's a mess. I have too many projects and the parts spill out all over the place. I am trying now to neaten it up but between the depression and my difficulty letting go of things it's definitely an uphill battle. Now, my place does not look like something off of one of those TV hoarding shows, but it's not tidy either. You can easily walk and see the floor in every room of the house and the porches as well. My hope is to reduce my vehicle fleet over the next few months and with it, the need to keep spare parts for the ones that I let go. I figure that if I can do that, I should be able to organize things well once again and have one less thing stressing me out.

Actually, mine is about the reverse of this. Over time, I became better with cleaning up, for the most part.

The opposite happened to me. Went from messy to tidy. Even my moments of mess has a structure.

This is one of my most challenging areas - executive functioning stuff for me takes a lot of effort. I am not sure I ever remember being all that tidy a person! Everything has its place though, if that makes sense....

At work I'm tidier than most, at home I'm messier than most.

Same here. At work, I am being paid to keep things orderly and so I do so out of duty. At home, I am responsible only to myself and so I let things go a bit.

At school, I'm very organised but at home, I go through phases. Sometimes, I don't care about the state of my room at all but other times, my attitude towards it is similar to those diagnosed with OCD!

My messiness hasn't changed much. The perception of it has changed, because expectations have risen.

I used to be tidy, but then a friend of mine at the time told me that it's better to just push everything (ie toys ect) to one side instead of tiding up, so since then I've never really tided up much :P. Everything is too much of a mess to start now. I do try, but it's hard.

I started getting into old computers and communications equipment about 10 years ago. So, I started to amass all kinds of small computer and radio parts, screws, switches, CPUs drives, antennas, manuals etc etc. Lately, I have become concerned that I'm collecting too much and I'm becoming a "Hoarder". So, I've decided to Downsize. I'm going through all of my stuff that I know for sure is useless or out-dated and just toss it straight into the garbage. Very Liberating I must say!!
