I have a story in which the main character (secretly) has Asperger's, and I thought I would give her uncommon food aversions. When I was her age, I had this thing against hard and crunchy foods, and preferred soft and chewy foods. So I thought I'd make her opposite, but the problem is I'm having a hard time reversing this aversion in my head, because of the amount of different foods that exist in the world.

So could you tell me about soft, spongey, chewy, or mushy foods that you hate?

Does her aversion even seem realistic, or should I give her the same sensitivities as myself?

Also, how do you feel about cake? Is there such a thing as a crunchy or crispy cake? I have an important scene involving birithday cake, but I just realized she might not like the texture of it...

I hate aubergines and okra. They're both mushy and slimy. I also can't stand rice porridge or any kind of porridge, really. I've never heard of a crunchy cake... Unless it's a burnt cake. I don't really like the way birthday cake feels in my mouth anyway. Unless it's an ice cream cake :D

If I get even a small piece of fish or meat in my mouth i start heaving immediately and have to spit it out or I'm going to throw up. Also, soft--boiled or raw eggs cause the same, so do fried eggs if there's only a small piece of the white underdone or any food that contains raw egg.

I think it would be easier if you give your character your own traits in this respect. Easier to describe than the opposite.

I have an aversion to olives because of their metalic taste.

The texture of eggs (or things with egg-like textures like quiche or flan) causes a severe and involuntary gagging response from me.

The same thing happens if I try to eat jello.

YES and YES! Eggs and Jello are the two worst textures on the planet. /shudder You can also add tapioca pudding and boba.

Thanks, guys! I already have so many more ideas.

I should totally give her an ice cream cake...or maybe one of those giant, frosted cookies.
