So last night I was sort of watching "What Would You Do?" on ABC while doodling or working on a craft like I normally do (that's as close as I come to multitasking) when this ad for one of those medicines that are supposed to shorten the length of a cold but only if you take it at the first sign comes on. This lady is walking down a busy city street and then suddenly sneezes. Into her sleeve of course, I don't know why but it really bugs me whenever I see that. Then this big furry ugly monster appears behind her and I guess he's the cold virus or something and he sneezes out huge disgusting clouds of droplets and wipes his nose which is just flowing with snot! The lady starts to run for her life as the monster gets closer and then she turns into an alley (stupidest TV/movie cliche ever) and then oh dear she's trapped and acting like OMG the cold monster virus whatever is coming and she's terrified like she's about to be raped or killed. But then oh! She reaches into her pocket and takes out some medication that's supposed to shorten a cold, but even if it does and I'm skeptical about it of course, she would still get one anyway wouldn't she? Anyway she takes the pill and as the monster is about to run across the street and into the alley he gets hit by a bus. Oh but don't worry about Mr. Hideous Snot-Muppet-Reject, at the end of the ad he's still alive just dazed and clinging to the bus and I'm sure he'll happily infect everyone who's on it.
I've always hated cold/flu/allergy pill ads with a passion, even as a kid. I generally ignore them when I'm watching TV alone but if someone else were even in the room and something like that comes on I get very uncomfortable and sometimes I have to get up and leave. In fact there's a lot of things on TV that make me feel like my skin is crawling if other people are around even if they aren't watching. They don't understand and neither do I, but THEY need to get over it. It's especially hard when I'm visiting my parents who watch TV a lot and my dad is hard of hearing and has these speakers that amplify the noise. He'll often eat supper watching TV while mom and I are at the table trying to have a pleasant meal and chatting like family members are SUPPOSED to do, and I often hear horrible or disgusting sounds from the TV and it makes me absolutely cringe and my mother has to YELL to my dad who is in the room next to us to please turn it down. I don't think they really understand, in fact they find it funny.

Your Dad outta get headphones for the TV.
And you need to lighten up. Or atleast hit the mute button when commercials come on.

Different things upset different people. I don't think it's fair for you to tell someone else to "lighten up", especially another person who's on the spectrum, as a lot of autistic people are emotionally sensitive (in spite of the ongoing stereotype that we're emotionless like Spock).

I saw an advert the other day that wasn;t gross, but it was rather disturbing. It went like this:
Some people, a family and friends, were out walking, and I thought the advert was going to be about camping holidays or a travel company or camping stuff or soemthing like that. Anyway, there was this boy who was saying "I spy something begginning with T". It seemed like a fun advert for a family related thing, and people kept guessing but got it wrong, until a girl said "is it tracks?2 while standing in the middle of some train tracks. Then the screen went black while train noises could be heard. Then there were some words or a logo or somethig while tha advert said "Distractions can cost you your life".
After that advert, I didn;t feel so good. It lead me in completely the wrong direction.

Were the characters all wired to devices? Ipods and phones?
Then that spot would make sense- as a warning against being distracted from your surroundings by these "weapons of mass distraction" we all have these days. If the characters didnt have those things than I do not see the point of the ad.
So yes - a pointlessly violent ad would be disturbing.
Here in the washington dc are we have a very strange TV ad campain (dont know if its national or not).
A little soap opera story.
Its starts with a young woman meeting a young guy in a furniture shop. Theyre both seated on opposite sides of a table.
The girl points to the thing she is sitting on and says "this is my satie. I designed it-with my mind.
He is impressed. Then he shows off his taste by showing her the funky jacket he is wearing. The upshot is that they both immediately fall in love.
Which is fine- doesnt sell me on the furniture store- but it ok.
But then story line continues in a sequel commercial.
The guy is back in the furninture store with his parents who murmer that "they finnally get to meet her". His fiance (the same girl we saw in the first ad) shows up and sits on the piece of furniture.
She then the explains that "because your son shopped at Haverty's he gets this [points to the satie], and he get THIS [points to herself]".
Then the guy's dad stands up and says "well just call me 'dad'". He and girl embrace. She says 'oh my god'. and then she says "you must workout, you have good abs"- (to her bf's DAD- she says that- expresses developing lust for her future father in law).
Talk about disturbing!
First they hook us on a budding love story.
But then then the story takes a rather 'earthy' turn when the girl refers to herself as "this". And then were shown budding lust between the son's fiance and the son's dad.!
WTF?
It would be a great opening scene of a taboo breaking XXX porno video.
But this is a TV commercial.
But the interesting thing is- that the second commercial comes in two versions.
The above was the first version that I used to always see.
But in the new alterted version- (a) the girl explains that "he gets ME [ not 'this'] when she points to herself. And then (b) when the dad hugs his son's girlfriend the girlfriend says "gee, you're HANDSOME. Then she instantanly flips arounds and points to the furniture thing and adds "just like my satie". She doesnt mention the dad's "abs". Its still kinda kinky- but not quite as crass.
I dont know if the new version replaces the old version, or if both run at different times at night. But the altered version is certainly cleaner.
The two ads obviously got,and held by attention. But they didnt instil any great desire in me to buy furniture from that store chain.

No, they didn't have phones, the "I spy" game was the distraction.
I don't have internet at home, so it's TV or nothing. But it's not that big a deal. I probably watch too much TV anyway.

I finnally saw the monster commercial you're talking about here.
Its for the cold remedy Zicam.
The monster is obviously patterned after the monsters in the classic childrens' book "Where the Wild Things Are" by Maurice Sendak ( illustrated, and I believe written by him as well).
In fact- I hope ZIcam is paying the Sendak estate royalties for it! Its that close a "literary reference".
He is scary, but cute scary.
I mean he is cute- AND he reminds me (and alot of folks) of that book from their childhoods- so - for alot of folks its actually a feel good commercial.
Thats kinda sad that you find a dumb little commercial like that upsetting and intrusive.
Oh well.
I recommend you find "Where the wild things are" in the childrens section of the library- you'll love it.

Maurice Sendak has sadly gone off permanently to where the wild things are earlier this year. So I guess they'd have to pay his estate.
