I gotta say, I'm a much bigger fan of the zombie renaissance than that whole sexy vampire thing...

I think it's because zombies have turned out to be surprisingly good for social satire and thought experiment. Who'da thunk?

Anyways, my favorite zombie movie is Fido. This movie is a smart, funny look at American consumerism/culture set in an alternate 1950s. It's got a lot of visual appeal as well if you like mid-century decor/style.

And my other pick is The Walking Dead... This show might seem like melodrama and gratuitous zombie porn, and it is, but it's also a harsh look at survival ethics and human nature in extreme situations... There's a lot to think about, if you like that sort of thing.

...and the comic is even better.

back in the eighties I read in newsweek about a vampire movie that had just come out- they showed a pic of an attractive suburban yuppie couple in bed together- both with stakes driven through their hearts!

Dont remember the name of the movie. But it sounded like a clever comedy-social satire.

BTW- in this film they dont like to be called "vampires". They prefered to be called "Carpathian Americans".

(the carpathians are the main mountain range in Transylvania).

As an H.P. Lovecraft fan, I gotta go with Re-Animator as my favorite zombie movie, but as far as TV shows go, my wife and I are hooked on The Walking Dead.

Re-Animator is the greatest, I'm a fairly big fan of the franchise and own many different versions of the films on dvd/the new Image blu ray and vhs. I so think that Herbert West is Aspie or at least has a few traits I can relate to.

Very probably West was an Aspie, as his creator, H.P. Lovecraft, almost certainly was.

My favorite zombies are the ones from the Left 4 Dead games. These zombies are still technically alive (they aren't walking corpses, but they have a disease that makes them zombie-like) and the games have that B-movie zombie flick 'feel' to them.

My favorite zombie movie would have to be Shaun of the Dead. I liked how they did the zombies, and how they sort of made fun of the whole zombie movie thing.

I agree with most of what has been said, especially the first post. You made up my mind about watching Fido, I had been hesitant before. Also I am a huge Walking Dead fan, the show and the comics. I can't wait for the new episode tonight on AMC, not available on Dish.

Damn. I saw thread title and was all "ooh, here's my chance to tell 'em about Fido."

Anyway, great movie. Loved it. For any zombie fan who'd like to see the idea of them explored from perspective other than straight-up horror, I highly recommend it.

The Walking Dead's make up artists amaze me at times i find them amazing. So that gets my favourite look. The comic gets my favourite for art work.
28 Days/Weeks Later (No virus vs. undead zombie debates) gets my favourite for urgency.
Night of the Living Dead gets my favourite for older films
Bub from Day of the Dead gets my most memorable zombie but the Zombieland clown was close second.
Shaun of the Dead for parody
Alice from the Resident Evil films is my favourite zombie killer and Resident Evil 1 is also my favourite zombie game.
No zombie novel has caught my eye yet so I have no favourite on that.

In regards to the OPs interest in the sociology of humans during a zombie apocalypse or satire on human kind itself i must agree with the fact i find it thought provoking and I could speak for a long time on my theories of that. It really is something amazing and alot of people miss it when it is right in front of them.
