[POLL] Special School or Mainstream School EPQ Research
For an EPQ (extended project qualification) I am writing an essay on is better to send pupils with learning disabilities to a special school with the specialist facilities and staff or a mainstream school with inclusion. As part of research I would appreciate your opinions and for polling. Thanks
If you want a good topic or case, follow "I STAND WITH HENRY". Henry is a guy who would like to go mainstream but can't because his school district refuses to do so. It is not uncommon.
At Autism Rights Watch, we advocate for mainstreaming because research show it allows pupils to copy other and to achieve a higher level of functioning.
Of course, mainstream has its challenges such as bullying and abuse by peers. But schools are suppose to protect pupils, aren't they ?
The decision to place a child of any neurological arrangement in a particular school should rely solely on that particular child. "Mild" can mean radically different things for different children; a child with mild social deficits and mild emotion disregulation issues may have severe attention or learning deficits that hinder their progress in traditional schooling; some students, like myself, can be rather sensitive, both physically and emotionally, but best learn to cope with these sensitivites through main-stream schooling. The specific child's learning and interaction styles and coping mechanisms must be taken into account.
