^^^^^^That's a lot of trouble to go to when you can just expose them to sunlight.

That's a bit strict. For me, a big criminal could do hard work or be a victim of life imprisonment. To be honest, pain and suffering after the sentence is a lot worse than getting killed. Who knows, getting amputated doesn't directly mean that the crime perpetrator will stop commiting crimes.
