Hi there,

I've been working from home since June (I run my small design studio full time now), and now that I have a lot of time to think, I've come to realise it's one of the best decisions I ever made. When I say time to think I'm referring to all the tiny minutes not spent communicating with coworkers and bosses, and being distracted by everyone and everything.

I know there's been plenty of talk about working from home on the forum (http://www.wrongplanet.net/postt178910.html), but I'd love to know if you work from home, what you do, if it suits you (as an aspie), and if you have any tips!

Thanks :)

I also currently work from home as a freelance digital artist. My previous job of nearly 6 years was slaving away at Subway so this beats the hell out of my former job. I get to make my own schedules and I only have to deal with people in text based form instead of face to face. My art commissioners are far and away much nicer and easier to deal with than Subway customers were. I specialize in animal/fantasy artwork, and I get most of my commissions from the "furry" community. I'm not a furry myself but I am good at drawing animals in anthro form and those people are willing to pay good money to have their personal characters drawn by their favorite artists. (I stay away from the porn side of the fandom as I only do clean artwork).

At first I opened up my art commissions immediately after I was fired (freed) from Subway as an "Oh s**t, I no longer have a job, what am I going to do?" thing, but when I got over $500 worth of art commissions lined up within a few hours of posting my commissions journal I realized that this could probably be doable. Ever since then business has been really good and while I may not get a steady paycheck every two weeks, the chunks of money I get from my art adds up and hour for hour I make much more than I did at Subway. It's also not nearly as stressful and I no longer have to deal with the lowest common denominators of society.

In the Spring/Summer I have about two yards that I mow for some cash every week and also do some outside work for my dad and step mom when they have various projects for their yard/house. They had quite a bit last Summer. They are getting older and can no longer do those things themselves so in a way it works out for me in that I get paid to help do it for them. They also save money this way because it would cost them more money to have a professional do it. It also helps that I live just a few blocks away from their house so it's very easy for me to just up and go over there at any time of the day.

I don't work from home ordinarily, but I did for two days during Hurricane Sandy, just because the power had gone out in our office building. I loved it and wish I could do it more often. There were no distractions, so I got so much more done.

I wish...

They were going to let us telecommute but someone complained it was racist because it discriminates against the poor and those without internet.

Maybe the rest of you could chip in and pay for internet for those last three people in the country who don't have the internet. ;-)

We have the technology (VPN, our phone system can connect with outside lines). But corporate policy doesn't allow me to. :(
